Defending champions breathing fire ahead of Prinsloo 7s

Defending National Sevens Circuit champions KCB Rugby will be aiming to make a strong statement when they kick off their title defence at the Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru this weekend.

The Bankers head into the opening leg of the 2026 circuit determined to better their last season’s performance at the tournament, where they finished as runners-up after falling 26-7 to Strathmore Leos in the Main Cup final.

Speaking during a training session at the KCB Sports Club, Ruaraka, head coach Andrew Amonde said he expected his side to excel in the opening leg, given the amount of preparation done during the off-season.

“We are excited to get back into competitive rugby and begin another National Sevens Circuit campaign," the former Shujaa captain said on Friday, 24 July. "The players have put in a tremendous amount of work during pre-season, and the focus now is to translate that preparation into strong performances on the pitch.

We know the competition will be tough from the very first tournament, but our ambition is to start the season positively and challenge for the Prinsloo 7s title.”

KCB enjoyed one of their most successful sevens campaigns last season, culminating in a historic overall circuit triumph.

The Bankers sealed the 2025 National Sevens Circuit title at the Dala 7s in Kisumu, where they defeated long-time rivals Kabras Sugar 12-5 in the final to lift the tournament trophy, and confirm their status as circuit champions.

The victory crowned a remarkable season in which KCB accumulated a record-breaking 126 points, to finish at the summit of the 2025 National Sevens Circuit standings, underlining their consistency across all six legs of the competition.

“Winning the overall circuit last season was a special achievement for everyone involved with the club, but that is now behind us," KCB skipper Elvis Olukusi stated. "Every new season presents fresh challenges and new opportunities. We know what it takes to compete at the highest level, and the objective is to begin strongly at Prinsloo 7s. The team is hungry, focused, and determined to fight for the title this weekend."

The team has been bolstered by the KCB arrival of Kenyan internationals Nygel Amaitsa from Strathmore Leos, and David Nyangige from Impala RFC, with a high chance being that both may make their debuts this weekend for the Amonde-led side.

Two more countries set to join Enterprise Cup ahead of 2027 edition

After the Prinsloo 7s, attention will quickly shift to Kisumu for the Dala 7s, scheduled for the weekend of 1-2 August.
