Newly appointed Gor Mahia captain Sylvester Owino has already set his targets with the club, with eyes on breaking two long-standing jinxes that have characterized the club in recent years.

Owino was named as the new captain earlier in the week, taking over from Philemon Otieno, who has since taken over the role of team manager following a successful career at the club before hanging up his boots at the end of last season.
While Otieno led the club to tremendous success in the FKF Premier League, K’Ogalo has had little to show at the continental level, where they have often been eliminated in the preliminary round.
With the club last qualifying for the CAF interclub group stage in the 2018/19 season when they made it to the CAF Confederation Cup (CAF CC) group stage, Owino is keen to lead the club back to continental glory.
"My predecessors achieved a great deal in domestic, regional, and continental competitions. However, we have always fallen short of reaching the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
I hope my tenure as Gor Mahia captain will be remembered for helping the club break that jinx and make it a routine to compete against the best teams on the continent,” said Owino in an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport.
Apart from the continental tournaments, the 22-time record league champions have also recorded dismal performances in the prestigious Mozzart Bet Cup.
In recent times, K’Ogalo has been shown the exit door by lower division sides, including BB Bread, who compete in the Nairobi Regional League, and Nairobi United, who defeated them in the 2025 Final while competing in the National Super League (NSL).
"Gor Mahia have gone five years without winning the Mozzart Bet Cup, and I hope we can reclaim the title next season.
Unfortunately, our campaigns in recent years have been cut short by lower-ranked teams. We are determined to put that right next season while also defending our league title," added Owino.
