Batoto ba Mungu did not feature last weekend after their scheduled clash with Kenya Police FC was postponed.
Police were involved in a CAF Champions League tie against Al Hilal of Sudan, a match played in Libya on Friday, where they suffered a 3-1 defeat, ending their continental campaign.
Mara Sugar, on the other hand, were active in Week 5, hosting Bidco United at the Awendo Green Stadium. The contest was evenly balanced and ended in a goalless draw.
Sofapaka have endured a mixed start to the season, having played four matches so far.
They have recorded one victory against Murang’a Seal, drawn with AFC Leopards, and lost to Gor Mahia and Kakamega Homeboyz.
The team sits in 16th place on the table with four points.
The Millers have had a similar start, playing four games and collecting one win against Ulinzi Stars, two draws against Kakamega Homeboyz and Bidco United, and one loss to newcomers Nairobi United.
They currently occupy 11th position with five points.
The two sides have met twice in the league, both encounters coming last season during Mara Sugar’s debut campaign in the top flight. Each match ended in a 1-1 draw, an indication of how evenly matched the teams have been.
Both clubs have undergone major squad changes since their last meetings.
Sofapaka lost several key players and rebuilt its squad with young talent from the lower leagues.
Mara Sugar also revamped their team, releasing several players and bringing in new faces from the lower divisions.
After the draw against Bidco United on Friday, Mara Sugar head coach Edward Manoah defended his young players after fans voiced frustration over the lack of a home win this season.
“There is a lot of negative pressure coming from outside, but it does not build. These young players have done extremely well, and they should be encouraged,” he said.
He added that most of his new players are inexperienced and need time to adjust to the demands of top-flight football.
“We have a young team, and most of the players have never played in the Kenyan Premier League before. Some have not even featured in the FKF Division One. They need time and patience to settle,” Manoah added.
