Celtic and Rangers dominate the football landscape in Scotland, boasting massive fan bases and historic rivalries that, command attention across the United Kingdom.
Responding to questions about whether he would consider managing Rangers ,who had been searching for a new head coach after a difficult start to the season, McCarthy admitted that leading either of the Glasgow giants would be a dream opportunity.
Rangers have since appointed German coach Danny Röhl, less than a week after he initially ruled himself out of contention.
His arrival came shortly after talks with Kevin Muscat collapsed.
Speaking to Best Betting Sites, McCarthy ,who has made an impressive start with Kenya’s national team, said every manager aspires to work at such a high level.
“I am up in Scotland right now, so who knows? I will definitely put my CV in for Rangers one day because that would be like managing Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, or Man United up in Scotland, that is how big they are.
Ditto Celtic. If that job were to become available, it would be a dream job for any manager worth their salt,” said McCarthy.
The former Champions League winner with FC Porto acknowledged the challenge of landing such a prestigious role, but maintained that ambition is what drives every coach.
"They are two massive clubs, and if opportunities like that present themselves, you have to put yourself out there.
The likelihood of getting it may be slim, it is almost mission impossible, but you can only hope.
That is the ambition of any manager; to reach the highest level possible,” he added.
McCarthy launched his coaching career in 2017 with Cape Town City in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL).
He quickly impressed by guiding the club to a top-three finish and winning the 2018 MTN8 trophy and his first major honour as a manager.
After leaving the club in 2019, he joined AmaZulu FC in 2020, steering them to a record second-place finish in the PSL and earning the Coach of the Season award, alongside a historic CAF Champions League berth.
In 2022, McCarthy joined Manchester United as a first-team coach under Erik ten Hag, focusing on forward play and individual player development, a stint widely credited for revitalizing Marcus Rashford’s form.
In March 2025, he took the reins of Kenya’s Harambee Stars, marking his entry into international management with a mission to elevate the team’s competitiveness on the continental stage.
