A total of six matches were played this past weekend, ending in mixed results. Some teams secured important victories, while some had their tribulations augmented.

Some tacticians saved their jobs, while some had to sink with the straws they were holding on to.

All in all, the ingredients of a league season have started manifesting, which then makes Mozzart Sport highlight some of the six key takeaways from round five fixtures.

Gor Mahia slowly finding rhythm

Record league champions Gor Mahia are slowly but surely finding the winning mojo that they really need this season.

This particular campaign is integral for the Kenyan giants as they have set their eyes on reclaiming the league, which they lost to Kenya Police FC.

K’Ogalo also lost the Mozzart Bet Cup to Premier League newbies Nairobi United and therefore missed out on continental football, prompting the management to make an overhaul in the technical bench.

The 21-time league champions began the season with a shock 1-0 defeat to Bidco United.

However, they managed to rediscover their winning formula and have since won three consecutive matches, including a 3-0 win over previous league leaders Posta Rangers on Sunday, 26 October at Nyayo Stadium.

Should they continue with their current form, K’Ogalo will be taking major steps towards winning the league title.

Things fall apart for Danstun Nyaudo

Ulinzi Stars' poor form has claimed a casualty following the dismissal of head coach Danstun Nyaudo.

The military side started the season on a high, securing a win in their season opener against Murang'a Seal and registering a draw against reigning league champions Kenya Police FC.

While the club managed three clean sheets in as many matches, their overall position in the league table was causing jitters to the club’s management, and two consecutive losses meant that the center could no longer hold, and Nyaudo had to leave.

Kariobangi Sharks' inexperience showing

By the 80th minute, Kariobangi Sharks were leading 1-0 and dominating their match against league newbies APS Bomet on Saturday, 25 October.

However, the William Muluya-coached side lacked concentration at both ends of the pitch, wasting chances in attack and defending sloppily in their own box.

The 2018 Mozzart Bet Cup champions lost the ball while attacking and committed a foul outside the penalty box to stop an APS transition.

However, from the resultant free kick in the 82nd minute, Duncan Mogasa managed to find the back of the net for his team’s equaliser before Philip Wasau capitalised on Sharks' high defensive line and schoolboy defending to score the winner two minutes later.

Once again, Sharks learnt the hard way that a loss in concentration at the top level will always be punished.

Reprieve for Ambani and AFC Leopards

AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani breathed a massive sigh of relief after guiding his team to secure an important victory over KCB FC.

The Kenyan giants had failed to record a win in their first three matches, and Ambani was under fire from a section of the club’s supporters who even sent him a warning letter with a two-match ultimatum.

In the last of the two matches, the 1998 league champions managed a 2-1 victory over KCB FC, with joy written all over Ambani’s face and jubilation after the final whistle.

The win gives the former Zoo FC tactician some breathing space and confidence to find a winning formula.

Charles Okere buys more time at Tusker

Just like Ambani, Tusker FC head coach Charles Okere was also under pressure from a section of fans and the management over poor results that had seen them sit at the bottom of the table before the weekend matches.

However, the Brewers squeezed a 1-0 victory at the expense of Murang’a Seal courtesy of an Erick Kapaito strike to earn Okere his first win of the season and more time at the club.

Increased fan attendance

On a much more positive note, fans are getting back to the stadium as the FKFPL continues to attract both new and seasoned fans.

In the past few seasons, fans attending matches had reduced significantly, save for Kisii-based side Shabana FC.

However, round five matches saw an increased number of fans across the three most supported clubs in the country.

Gor Mahia recorded over Ksh900,000 in ticketing revenue, their highest of the season; Leopards over Ksh400,000 and Shabana hit the Ksh1 million mark.
