WC final heroics may have been his last for Argentina: Emi hints at international farewell

The disappointment in Argentina after losing the World Cup final is immense. This is also reflected in the fact that as many as nine players did not return to their homeland, instead going their separate ways, returning to their clubs, and taking well-deserved breaks.

Emiliano Martinez wasn't one of them, but his name is in the spotlight today, as he might have hinted at an international retirement.

If there is anyone who didn't deserve to go out like this, it is Dibu. He was by far the best Argentina player in the final, making 11 saves and setting a new World Cup final record.

Four years ago, when La Albiceleste won the World Cup title, Martinez was arguably the most deserving player in that triumph, denying Randal Kolo Muani's point-blank shot in the dying minutes of extra time.

Had that been the only thing he had done for the national team, it would have been enough to cement his legacy and earn him a place in history. Yet his contribution went far beyond that.

Since his debut in June 2021, Emi has made 67 appearances for Argentina and won the World Cup and two Copa America titles.

But above all, he's been one of the national team's key figures and its heart and soul. And if this is really the final chapter, it's a pity it wasn't written in a more beautiful way.
