Chelsea are weighing up a surprise move for Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck as Xabi Alonso looks to add proven Premier League experience to his attacking options.

The 35-year-old has entered the final year of his contract at Brighton, and the Seagulls are aware of Chelsea's interest. While negotiations remain in their early stages, there is growing optimism that an agreement can be reached.

Welbeck is understood to be highly regarded by Alonso, not only for his quality on the pitch but also for the leadership and experience he would bring to one of the Premier League's youngest squads.

The move would mark a shift in Chelsea's recent recruitment strategy.

Having spent the last few transfer windows investing heavily in players under the age of 25, the Blues are now placing greater emphasis on footballers with extensive Premier League experience. Earlier in this transfer window, they attempted to sign veteran midfielder Granit Xhaka and also expressed interest in free-agent defender John Stones.

Welbeck fits that profile perfectly.

The former England international enjoyed arguably the finest league campaign of his career last season, scoring 13 Premier League goals while missing just one match as Brighton finished another impressive campaign. Since arriving from Watford in 2020, he has registered 51 goals in 201 appearances for the south coast club.

His career has taken him through some of England's biggest clubs.

A product of Manchester United's academy, Welbeck scored 29 goals in 142 matches before joining Arsenal in 2014. He spent six seasons in north London, adding another 32 goals, before a brief spell at Watford and his resurgence at Brighton.

Ironically, Manchester United themselves explored bringing him back to Old Trafford last year before deciding against a move. Chelsea's pursuit also reflects uncertainty surrounding their current attacking department.

The club are willing to listen to offers for Liam Delap and Emmanuel Emega, while Marc Guiu is expected to leave either on loan or in a permanent transfer.

Nicolas Jackson has returned following his loan spell at Bayern Munich after the Bundesliga champions opted not to activate their purchase option, but the Senegal international was left out of Chelsea's pre-season tour of Australia and has attracted interest from Aston Villa.

Should the move materialise, Welbeck would arrive at Stamford Bridge not as a long-term project, but as an experienced leader capable of making an immediate impact - exactly the profile Xabi Alonso appears to be searching for.
