The FKF Premier League side eventually proved too strong for the FKF Division One outfit in a lively seven-goal encounter that lit up the dull Kisii afternoon, with new signing Assis Mwambote stealing the headlines after bagging a brace.

Keith Imbali, Wycliffe Omondi and Kevin Omundi were also on target for coach Peter Okidi’s side as the Glamour Boys marched into the Round of 16, joining KCB and Tusker among the teams already through.

Okidi named a strong line-up for the tie, clearly keen to avoid any upset and maintain momentum in a season where Shabana remain firmly in the hunt for silverware.

Tore Bobe currently sits third in the FKF Premier League standings, 10 points behind leaders Gor Mahia, and the cup represents an alternative pathway towards continental football.

Despite the gulf in league status, the opening exchanges proved more stubborn than Shabana might have anticipated. Muhoroni defended with discipline while the hosts struggled to find rhythm in the early stages.

Winger Ezekiel Omuri squandered a couple of promising chances as the home side tried to force an early breakthrough, while Brian Michira’s inviting crosses repeatedly went unanswered in the box due to the slow reactions of Mwambote and the Shabana frontline.

However, once the match drifted past the 20-minute mark, Shabana gradually began to settle into their stride, circulating the ball with greater confidence and pinning Muhoroni deeper inside their own half.

The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 37th minute.

Imbali delivered a teasing cross into the danger area, and Mwambote timed his run perfectly, rising to connect with a firm header that beat the Muhoroni goalkeeper and ignited celebrations around Gusii Stadium.

Buoyed by the opener, the Glamour Boys tightened their grip on proceedings and struck again just before the break.

In the 44th minute, Omundi capitalised on defensive hesitation to slot home Shabana’s second goal, handing the hosts a comfortable cushion heading into halftime.

Shabana resumed the second half with the same intensity and attacking urgency, determined to kill the contest early.

Their pressure paid off when defender Wycliffe Omondi rose highest to power home a header from a corner kick, marking his first goal of the cup competition and stretching the lead to 3-0.

With the game firmly under their control, Shabana dictated the tempo, patiently moving the ball across the pitch while Muhoroni struggled to contain their attacking waves.

Mwambote soon completed his brace in the 58th minute, finishing off a well-worked move to make it 4-0 and effectively put the result beyond doubt.

To their credit, Muhoroni refused to capitulate quietly; the visitors pulled one back in the 70th minute to give their travelling supporters (a handful) something to cheer about, and they added a second goal in the 83rd minute as Shabana briefly lost their defensive shape.

Any thoughts of a dramatic comeback, however, were extinguished in stoppage time when Imbali sealed the emphatic victory with Shabana’s fifth goal in the 90th minute.

The final whistle confirmed an entertaining afternoon for the home fans and another step forward in Shabana’s ambitious season.
