Goals from Boniface Omondi, who grabbed a brace, Richard Omondi and Nigerian cum Djiboutian striker Samuel Feargod ensured the Bankers became the second side to progress to the next round after Tusker.

For Feargod, the afternoon carried extra significance as the forward netted his maiden goal for KCB since joining the club last month from South Sudanese side El Merriekh Bentiu, capping a clinical attacking performance from the top-flight side against the FKF Division One outfit.

The result not only extended KCB’s journey in the cup but also offered welcome relief for head coach Robert Matano, whose side has struggled for consistency in the league and is looking to rebuild confidence through the knockout competition.

Match Report

KCB entered the match with a strong line-up, clearly intent on avoiding any upset. However, the opening minutes resembled a cautious chess match rather than a cup tie, with both sides probing for rhythm on a rain-soaked surface that slowed down the pace of play.

The Bankers created the first meaningful opportunity in the eighth minute when Kelvin Etemesi found space in the area, but his effort was deflected wide by a Zetech defender.

Gradually, Matano’s charges began to tighten their grip on proceedings. By the quarter-hour mark, they were pushing the students deeper into their own half, though Zetech still attempted to build patiently from the back.

Humphrey Mieno soon crafted a dangerous cross that fell kindly to Etemesi, but once again a defender intervened to deny the striker a clean strike on goal.

Former Gor Mahia forward Boniface Omondi then tried his luck in the 16th minute, unleashing a fierce half-volley from distance that sailed narrowly over the crossbar.

The match briefly paused in the 18th minute as centre referee Edwin Mang’oli attended to an issue with his communication equipment before play resumed with KCB continuing to dictate the tempo.

Despite the pressure, Zetech had their moments. Goalkeeper William Odek even produced a moment of audacity in the 24th minute when he controlled a back pass and dribbled past two KCB attackers near his penalty area.

Still, the breakthrough arrived just before halftime.

In the 39th minute, David Sakwa did the hard work down the left flank, twisting past a defender before delivering a teasing ball into the penalty area.

Richard Omondi, sandwiched between defenders, stretched to guide the ball with his weaker foot into the bottom corner while falling to the turf, handing KCB a deserved lead.

The Bankers doubled their advantage barely three minutes later.

Boniface Omondi pounced on a loose ball inside the box, calmly controlling it before slotting past Odek in a one-on-one situation to make it 2-0 and send KCB into the break firmly in command.

Second half

Zetech emerged from the restart with renewed determination, launching a series of early attacks in search of a lifeline, but their momentum gradually faded as KCB regained control of possession.

On the hour mark, Omondi struck again to effectively end the contest.

The move began with the creative brilliance of Francis Kahata, whose delicate chipped pass floated over the defence into Omondi’s path.

Without taking a touch, the striker met it with a thunderous half-volley that crashed off the underside of the crossbar and over the line before bouncing back into play.

Referee Mang’oli quickly pointed to the centre spot, confirming KCB’s third goal despite protests from Odek, who was subsequently booked for dissent.

With the result all but sealed, both coaches turned to their benches around the 70th minute.

Matano introduced Samuel Feargod and Apollo Otieno, while Zetech coach Bernard Kitolo responded with Jimmy Omondi and Edwin Maina.

The changes appeared to slow the tempo momentarily, but Feargod soon announced his arrival in style.

In the 75th minute, the Nigerian cum Djibouti forward calmly slotted home into the bottom left corner to register his first goal for the Bankers and complete the rout.

The final minutes unfolded at a gentler pace as the rain eased and both teams seemed content to see out the match without further drama.

At the final whistle, KCB players celebrated knowing they had safely navigated a potentially tricky tie and booked their place in the next round.

The Bankers will be hoping this emphatic victory signals the start of another strong cup run.

In the last three editions of the Mozzart Bet Cup, KCB have experienced mixed fortunes; their best campaign came in 2024 when they reached the final after eliminating MOFA, Bidco United, Kakamega Homeboyz and Kariobangi Sharks, only to fall to Kenya Police on penalties after a goalless draw.

In the 2023 tournament, they were knocked out in the Round of 16 by Bidco United following a penalty shootout, while in the 2025 edition, their journey ended against eventual champions Nairobi United.

With their latest victory in Embu, KCB will once again dare to dream of lifting the cup and possibly securing a ticket to represent Kenya on the continental stage in the CAF Confederation Cup.
