Mariga says the aim is for the team to reach at least the quarterfinal stage, a goal that has fueled a drive to recruit players of Kenyan descent currently playing in Europe.
A fortnight ago, Mariga, alongside Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy and other federation officials, embarked on a scouting mission across Europe.
Their focus was on players in England and Germany with Kenyan roots, encouraging them to commit to Harambee Stars.
Early results have been promising. German-based forward Andre Gitau, who previously represented the United States at junior levels, has pledged his commitment.
So have Zak Vyner of Wrexham and Tyler Onyango of Everton. A few other players have requested additional time to consult before making a final decision.
Asked about the strategy for AFCON and the ongoing recruitment efforts, Mariga emphasised that the mission is to assemble the strongest possible team.
The European talent hunt is central to this strategy, seeking to identify players who can make an immediate impact.
“We have been scouting for talent across Europe. In Germany, for instance, we looked at players like Linton Maina of FC Köln, among others, who we believe could strengthen the national team,” he told Sporty FM.
Mariga is clear on the team’s minimum target for AFCON. The last time Kenya hosted CHAN, the team reached the quarterfinals but was eliminated by Madagascar on penalties.
“We don’t just want to participate in AFCON 2027; we aim to compete. Our goal is at least the quarter-finals, maybe even the semi-finals. We want to show the world that Kenyan football is back.”
He also shed light on the preparations under coach McCarthy, noting the focus on giving young talents exposure to determine who is ready to step up for the tournament. The team plans to play numerous matches to sharpen their skills ahead of AFCON.
“That’s why we are actively seeking talented players abroad. In the last window in November 2025, the coach called up several young players. We fielded a youthful side against Senegal because he wanted to assess their potential.
This window, we have even more young players participating in the FIFA Series in Rwanda. The upcoming qualifiers, friendlies, and training camps will also help us prepare for the tournament. By the time AFCON arrives, we will have a team ready to compete at the highest level.”
On coach McCarthy’s abilities, Mariga expressed confidence in the South African tactician’s leadership and vision.
“We are fortunate to have a great coach in Benni. He understands football at the highest level, having excelled both at club level, winning the Champions League, and for his national team.
He has a unique ability to blend youth with experience, and he knows how to work with players effectively. We just need to give him time and support to build a strong squad ahead of AFCON.”
Currently, Harambee Stars are in Rwanda competing in the FIFA Series tournament. They will open their campaign on Friday against Estonia.
