Harambee Stars midfielder Mohammed Bajaber says his latest call-up to the national team is a chance for him to redeem himself, following a tough spell with injury.

Bajaber’s name made a surprise return to Benni McCarthy’s squad this month, making it the first time he was involved with Harambee Stars in close to a year.

The Simba player dropped out of the national team in the lead-up to last year’s African Nations Championships (CHAN) due to injury, and has only appeared in two games for the Tanzanian giants, since his signing at the beginning of the season.

That run is a stark contrast to the man who was on top of his form at Kenya Police, where he played an instrumental role in helping the club win a first Premier League title, all while making a star debut for Harambee Stars.

“That’s football. You have the highest of highs at one point in your career, and suddenly a year later you are pretty low, low,” Bajaber said of his turn-around in form over the last 12 months.

“I can't really say too much, but obviously I am dealing with the injury and hopefully trying to get back to my best.”

Still rusty, Bajaber says his latest opportunity to be with the national team is one he will use to get him back into shape.

“Of course it is an opportunity,” the 23-year-old said. “I haven't been playing, so I am looking at it as a chance to redeem myself, not just with Kenya, but physically as well, it is a big chance.”

Bajaber’s last involvement for club and country came on 18 January, when he came off the bench in Simba’s 1-1 draw against Mtibiwa Sugar.

To be reintegrated to the national team despite that run, Bajaber was effusive of McCarthy saying: “His trust in me means a lot. Every time somebody gives you a chance, not just to come and represent your national team, but also everyday life, you have to be grateful, and I am.”

Should he get an opportunity to suit up, his first game back could see him feature against Estonia in the first of two FIFA Series friendlies, scheduled for Friday, 27 March (6PM EAT) at Amahoro Stadium, Rwanda.

“Expect me to give my all,” Bajaber concluded.
