
Four Harambee Stars CHAN heroes proposed for Mashujaa Day award

Harambee Stars quartet of goalkeeper Bryne Omondi, Aboud Omar, Ryan Wesley Ogam and Alpha Onyango are among the sportspersons proposed for national recognition.

The National Heroes Council has published the names of 180 individuals who are proposed to receive various awards and recognition. If approved, the individuals will be declared national heroes.
The final list of approved individuals will receive their crowns and conferments during the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations scheduled for Monday, 20 October in Ithookwe Stadium, Kitui County.
The proposed list includes individuals from varying sectors, including sports, liberation struggles, entrepreneurship industry, human rights, philanthropy, arts, indigenous knowledge, cultural values and practices.
Others are spiritual leadership, scholarship and professionalism, research, peace making, statesmanship, national cohesion and integration as well as environmental conservation.
According to the communication, Ogam is honoured for his role with the national team, where he scored two crucial goals for Harambee Stars during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Bryne Omondi is honoured for his contribution to the Kenyan football sector and the Harambee Stars, where he put in solid performances in CHAN, including winning a Man-of-the-Match award against Morocco.
Also on the list is Gor Mahia star Alpha Chris Onyango, who, just like Omondi, is honoured for his role at CHAN, including two Man-of-the-Match performances.
To crown the Kenyan CHAN squad is captain Aboud Omar, who is honoured for his contribution in the Kenyan football sector, including leading the Harambee Stars to a quarter-final finish in the biennial tournament.
2024 CHAN and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairperson Nicholas Musonye has also been proposed due to his contribution to soccer in the East African region.
Musonye is a former Secretary General of the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), where he organised tournaments that promoted the talents and image of Kenya.
Junior Starlets U-17 head coach Mildred Cheche has also been proposed due to her role in football development. Cheche famously led the Rising Starlets to the FIFA Women's U17 World Cup.
In total, 31 sports personalities have been proposed, including Kennedy Omwange Ndemo, Clarence Mwakio Ingalwa, Vincent Ongera, Mourice Omondi, Shadrack Andenga, Catherine Mutwa and Clinton Aluvi.
Others are Cynthia Chepkirui, Nancy Chepngetich, Eric Sikuku, Rebecca Kerubo, Pauline Sheghu, Linet Sheghu, Linet Ayuko and Sharon Bitok.
The list also includes Wandia Lucas, Anne Lichina, Jairus Ongeta, Faith Ogallo, Kennedy Ogada, Fabian Kungu, Parin Simiyu, James Kagambi, Morris Okolla, Abraham Mutala and Nichodemus Kimathi.
