Sammy Kyengo had been missing since Saturday, 6 September, as reported by his wife, and an active search for his whereabouts was ongoing.
A week later, Saturday 13 September, the lifeless body of Kyengo was found floating in a water sump that is located behind the terraces under construction on the left side of the stadium.
The 35-year-old’s body was discovered by a casual labourer who was clearing one of the partitioned rooms for plaster.
The labourer noticed several boards covering what appeared to be a water sump and discovered the lifeless body of Kyengo after removing the boards.
Crime Scene Investigators (CSIs) from the Nairobi area noted visible injuries at the back of Kyengo’s head and the right side of the neck. Additionally, blood was reportedly oozing from his nose and mouth.
The CSI took the body of the deceased and transferred it to the Nairobi Funeral Home (formerly City Mortuary) after investigating the scene, as the family and country at large await an autopsy to shed more light on the cause of his death.
According to workers at the facility who were turned away from work on the day Kyengo’s body was discovered, the deceased was an amiable man.
“He was a good man who was at peace with everyone and just interested in reaping from the fruits of his labour. All we are now calling for is Justice to be done,” said Victor Walumbe.
This is the first major incident at the facility that has resulted in fatality. The management is yet to issue a formal statement over the matter, but together with the safety and security department, they will help the police in carrying out investigations.
Talanta Sports City is Kenya’s flagship project, aimed at improving the sporting industry in the country and will serve as Kenya’s main stadium in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) that the country will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
