The team released a heartfelt statement expressing their support for Kubu and his family during this difficult time

Kabras Sugar RFC dynamic back Jone Kubu is navigating a challenging period after being struck by a double tragedy.

Just days after proposing to his girlfriend in a joyous personal milestone, Kubu has been thrown into mourning following the loss of both his father and uncle.

The devastating news has left the rugby community rallying around the talented Fijian-born player, who has been a cornerstone of Kabras RFC’s success on the pitch.

The team released a heartfelt statement expressing their support for Kubu and his family during this difficult time.

“We extend our deepest condolences to our back Jone Kubu and his family during this difficult time. Losing both your father and uncle is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts go out to you.

May you find strength in the love and support of those around you, and may the memories of your loved ones bring you comfort in the days ahead. We stand with you in this moment of grief and pray for peace for you and your family,” the team’s statement read.

This emotional period comes on the heels of a significant life moment for Kubu, who had recently proposed to his partner in what should have been a time of celebration.

Kubu has been a rare gem for Kabras RFC, steering the team to its first-ever Kenya Cup victory in 2016, before recapturing the title on other several occasions, including the concluded 2022/23 and 2023/24 Kenya Cup seasons.

The Fijian-born rugby player also propelled the Sugarmen to their maiden Enterprise Cup title in 2019, which they have since retained.

Kubu arrived in Kenya in 2015 as part of the Samurai team for the annual Safari Sevens and was part of a group of Fijian players signed by Kenya Cup side Kabras Sugar.

While his mates stayed for a year and left, Kubu found a new love for Kenya and felt right at home. Six years later, he received a call-up to the Kenya Simbas team by the then head coach Paul Odera, courtesy of a change in the rules of eligibility by World Rugby.

He played for the 15s side and also received some call-ups with the sevens, but it was in the longer version of the game that he found a home. Only time can tell what he holds in the 15s game.
