Mwamba RFC’s seasoned stalwart Eliakim Kichoi has sparked excitement among rugby fans by hinting at a potential comeback to the pitch.
The versatile backrower who has been out of action since the 2024 Rugby Super Series, recently teased his return in a social media post.
“No caption yet but grateful. Maybe might wear a jersey in 2025,” the post read.
His return is expected to be a great boost for Mwamba who had a rocky start to the season. The Mark Mshila-coached side sits 10th on the log without a single point after losing all their opening matches.
His last action was during the Rugby Super Series when he represented the Lions and led them to a second-place finish.
He took a break from rugby during the 2023 season, noting that he had an overwhelming year after turning up for Mwamba RFC in the 2022/23 Kenya Cup season and the National Sevens circuit.
Kichoi helped the 2014 Christie Sevens winners manage a semifinal during the Tisap 7s. The side registered mixed results in the 2023 National National Circuit, crushing out of three quarterfinals. They settled for fifth place with 79 points.
According to Kichoi, in light of certain personal issues, he felt it was crucial to prioritize his well-being and take some time off. He, however, assured his fans that he would be back bigger and better.
The former track and field athlete arrived at Mwamba in 2014 fresh from college, but his footsteps date back to 2007 in the town of Voi, Taita Taveta County, while a student at St Bartholomew Secondary School.
The 2018 Dala Sevens Most Valuable Player started as a winger and centre in Mwamba in the 2014 season.
He quickly rose through the ranks and was appointed captain of the sevens team in 2018. It was that year that he went on to be named Most Valuable Player at Dala Sevens 2018. He also earned a call-up to the Kenya Sevens in the same year and has played a pivotal role.
When not playing rugby, Kichoi is a businessman who you will find running errands at his company Eliabu Arts and Design which focuses on design, branding, and printing services.
He is also a coach at Kitengela Sharks Rugby Club as well as Future Stars African Games (FSAG) age grade academy.
