It was not until Uganda’s Jinja Hippos released their transfer list that now-former Kenya Harlequin winger Tony Khadambi realized that he had made yet another piece of history.
Khadambi, popularly referred to as Polisi within rugby circles is set to embark on another new chapter with the side.
It is not his first rodeo in Uganda, having served as the Tororo Rugby Age Grade Coordinator for the better part of 2024.
Known for his flair, speed, and explosive power, Khadambi has been a standout on the rugby field.
He is a utility player capable of fitting seamlessly into multiple positions on the backline, and his prowess in contact situations and knack for scoring crucial tries have made him a headache to any opponents.
The move was confirmed by Hippos RFC on their social media handles.
“As a player, he has always lived by this mantra: 𝗕𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗱, 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁. 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙏𝙬𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙂𝙄𝙑𝙀, 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙀𝘼𝙍𝙉.
On the field, he possesses flair, SPEED, POWER-STRENGTH. He is a utility player and fits well in multiple positions on the backline.
He is a MENACE when in contact situations, he's able to burst through hard tackles, gain meters through explosive runs, and score hard-to-come-by tries in a game against any opponent. Off the Field he's a lawyer by profession and a businessman by choice,” the post read.
It is not a false advertisement. Polisi has plied his trade for several teams including former Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship side Impala RFC, 2024 National 7s Circuit champions Kenya Harlequin, Homeboyz RFC, and Moi University Arsonists. He also played for Kenya during the 2022 Middle East-Africa Rugby League Championship.
The Kakamega High School alumni earned recognition in Uganda during his time with Tororo 7s and Tororo Crests.
His presence is expected to bolster the Ugandan side’s pursuit of glory in the coming season.
Beyond the pitch, Polisi is equally impressive. He is a lawyer by profession.
Khadambi’s transfer to Jinja Hippos is just one of many moves shaping the East African rugby landscape.
Among other notable signings, Maurice Ochieng has joined Victoria Sharks, a team that has made an impressive 38 new additions this season.
The Sharks also welcomed Israel Makokha Wekulo from Kakira, Barasa Fiddy from Jinja Hippos, and Odhiambo Elvince from Kisumu RFC.
Meanwhile, Western Bulls’ Andrew Odhiambo, last season’s top scorer and a standout for Uganda's Emerging 7s during the Safari 7s, has joined KOBS.
The movement of Uganda Cranes players, including Charles Uhuru and Kivumbi Saul to Victoria Sharks and Jjuko Jude to Eagles, highlights the region’s growing competitiveness.
