Stormers had seen off Uganda’s Jinja SS 17-7 while Vihiga High School defeated Kitondo High 35-5
It will be an all Western affair when Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) rugby 7s defending champions Koyonzo meet Vihiga in the final of the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) games pencilled for Saturday, August 24 at the Huye Stadium in Rwanda.
To proceed to the final stage, the Stormers had seen off Uganda’s Jinja SS 17-7 while Vihiga High School defeated Kitondo High 35-5.
The two sides will be looking to renew their rivalry. They last time they clashed at the KSSSA national rugby 7s finals on August 11 at the BullRing grounds in Kakamega, Stormers hit their opponents 22-12 to retain the coveted title.
This will also be a repeat of the Western region finals between the two sides that ended in a 17-7 score in favour of Koyonzo at the same venue.
The finals will be curtain-raised by the third place playoff featuring Kitondo High School and Jinja SS of Uganda.
Stormers’ head coach Elly Okwemba, the massive win was fuelled by the one-day break, and the boys had comfortably adjusted to the climate in Rwanda.
“The boys have adapted to the Rwanda climate. The travel fatigue is over and they had rest yesterday .My captain missed two matches but recovered for the semifinals match. We had one key player who was down because of malaria but we had a possible replacement,” the audibly excited Okwemba told Mozzart Sport.
Kitondo high school coach Dennis Chikamai said that they are anticipating an uphill task, but would be keen to right their wrongs to occupy third place.
“We are so happy to reach this stage. Our plan is to work on the defence which we believe will give us the much-needed win. We expect a good run from the boys because that game is crucial and we will do everything possible to win,” Chikamai offered.
Meanwhile, St Mary’s Yala finished fifth after humbling Uganda’s Kiira College 26-5 in the fifth-place playoff.
