The last African coach in Top 5 is sacked

Habib Beye is no longer the coach of Olympique Marseille

He was the only African coach in the Top 5 European leagues until today. Before him there was Moroccan tactician Ahmed Kantari was appointed as Nantes boss in December 2025 but was already sacked in March this year. But as of today, Senegalese Habib Beye is no longer Marseille boss. To be precise, the decision was made official today, but everybody knew he will be out weeks ago. When (another) crisis happened in Olympique Marseille in February, Roberto De Zerbi resigned and sporting director Medhi Benatia followed him, but stayed until the end of the season, upon request of the club’s owner. He appointed former player Habib Beye, but his record was terrible: six defeats from 13 matches in charge and lost place in the Champions League. Now, he is out and Bruno Genesio was appointed as the new coach.

The club's hierarchy is placing its faith in Bruno Genesio's impressive resume. Named France's Manager of the Year in 2022, he has enjoyed successful spells with Lyon, Rennes, and Lille, whom he guided to a third-place finish last season. He is widely regarded as an outstanding tactician—but tactics are one thing; surviving in Marseille is something else entirely. The reason his appointment took so long, even though everybody knew that Beye was gonna be fired was UEFA's decision regarding Financial Fair Play regulations. As reported by RMC Sport, the future OM coach was relieved that Marseille would not be excluded from the Europa League, and then the deal was struck quickly.

I chose to join Olympique de Marseille because I was drawn in by the challenge that was presented to me. OM is a unique club, with an exceptional history, a strong identity and supporters whose passion is recognised far beyond its borders. I am truly delighted to be part of this new project. I cannot wait to begin working with everyone at the club and with the players to build a squad worthy of Olympique de Marseille's ambitions” said Genesio.
