The host nations fairytale continues as USA dispatch Bosnia to advance to the round of 16
San Francisco Bay Area stadium shook to its foundations as the USA delivered a night for the ages — Folarin Balogun's moment of magic, followed by a moment of madness, couldn't stop Mauricio Pochettino's side from putting Bosnia and Herzegovina to the sword.
In a match that saw a red card, a talisman's tearful exit, and a ten-man rearguard stand later, the Americans emerged 2-0 winners, ending a 24-year knockout curse in front of a delirious home crowd.
Under the lights ,the USA delivered a first half blitz that Bosnia and Herzegovina simply couldn't answer. Folarin Balogun's stoppage-time strike , preceded by a disallowed effort, sent the home crowd into raptures and gave the Americans a deserved 1-0 lead at the break, a scoreline that barely captured their total dominance of the opening 45 minutes.

The USA seized control from kickoff, pinning Bosnia and Herzegovina deep inside their own half with sustained pressing and quick combination play.
Christian Pulisic, restored to the lineup after his calf injury, tested the visitors' backline in the opening exchanges, while Sergiño Dest and Antonee Robinson probed from the flanks.
Bosnia, appearing in their maiden World Cup knockout tie, sat compact behind captain Edin Džeko and looked to break on the counter, but rarely threatened Matt Freese's goal. American goalkeeper Freese was called into action just once, producing a smart save off Eremdin Demirovic for a corner.
Weston McKennie's driving run down the right set up Robinson, whose free header from a inviting cross drifted narrowly over the bar a glaring miss.
Balogun drilled a low shot into the bottom right corner past Vasilj to apparently open the scoring, only for the flag to go up for offside.
The USA continued to press, and the breakthrough finally came at the stroke of halftime as sustained American pressure forced Bosnia into two loose touches near their own box, and Balogun reacted quickest, sweeping a deflected ball past Vasilj to make it 1-0.
Balogun should have made it two deep into second half added time after some lovely USA interplay , Adam’s found Dest with a delightful dink, the PSV man found Balogun who could only put his shot over the crossbar as the teams headed into the break.
Bosnia came out swinging for the second half, making three substitutions inside the opening five minutes as captain Džeko limped off injured — a possible final World Cup appearance for the 40-year-old talisman. But it was the USA who struck the decisive blow of a chaotic 45 minutes.
In the 64th minute, drama erupted: Balogun, already the hero of the first half, stepped on the ankle of Tarik Muharemović.
Referee Raphael Claus initially played on, but a VAR review overturned the call, and Balogun was shown a straight red — his tournament goal-scoring run ending in the worst possible fashion, with a suspension now looming for the next round too.
Reduced to ten men, the USA might have wilted. Instead, they dug in. Malik Tillman doubled the lead soon after, scored the 6th direct free kick of the tournament make it 2-0 with a sumptuous knuckleball and send the home crowd into raptures once more.
Bosnia, sensing an opening against ten men, pushed numbers forward but continued to lack the cutting edge that had eluded them all night.
Their fresh legs off the bench created half-chances but nothing clean past a resolute American backline marshaled by Tim Ream and Chris Richards.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Pochettino's side saw out the closing stages with composure, booking a historic Round of 16 date with Belgium and ending their 24-year wait for a World Cup knockout win.
