Veteran football administrator Rachier appointed to lead top flight transition committee

The future governance of the FKF Premier League has taken a significant step forward after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and top-flight clubs agreed to establish a seven-member transition committee tasked with developing a roadmap towards a more independent league structure.

The breakthrough was reached during a consultative meeting between FKF officials and Premier League club representatives in Nairobi on Wednesday, which ended weeks of uncertainty after clubs opposed the continued direct management of the league by the federation.

Leading the committee is Gor Mahia chairman Ambrose Rachier, whose vast experience in football administration is expected to steer discussions on the legal and governance framework required to reshape the country's premier competition.

Also appointed to the committee are Mara Sugar CEO Ruth Omalla, Kenya Police chairman Japheth Munyendo, and FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee chairman Frank Ogolla, alongside representatives from both the federation and Premier League clubs.

The committee will convene for the first time next week and is expected to outline the legal, governance, and operational milestones needed to transition the league towards a more autonomous model while ensuring the 2026/27 season kicks off as scheduled on 22 August.

The move follows growing pressure from Premier League clubs, who had threatened to boycott the new season over concerns about the federation's direct control of the competition.

The clubs have consistently argued that an independent league would promote better governance, improve commercial opportunities, and enhance professionalism.

The Kenyan Premier League (KPL) Limited, which previously managed the country's top flight, ceased operations in September 2020 after FKF declined to renew its mandate, leaving the federation to take over the running of the competition under the FKF Premier League banner.

FKF President Hussein Mohammed described the meeting as a positive step towards transforming Kenyan football.

"We have had very good deliberations today with the league teams. We have formed a seven-member transition team that will give us recommendations on how we can achieve our objectives," said the federation head.

"It is a consultative meeting to discuss how we can professionalize the league and make it even better in terms of its governance structures. My vision is clear and simple: we need to be the best league on the continent."

Mohammed added that the federation would also engage sponsors and other key stakeholders before implementing any proposed reforms.

"The team is meeting for the first time next week, and they will give us the details, the milestones, and the pathway to achieving the objective," he added.

Mathare United chairman Jacktone Obure welcomed the agreement, stressing that establishing an independent league would require a structured legal process rather than rushed decisions.

"We agreed that it's a process. It's something that we cannot just wake up and do immediately. They will look at the legal framework and advise us on the way forward," said Obure.

He also dismissed reports suggesting clubs intended to delay the new campaign.

"We don't want anything to delay the league. We have players under contract, and clubs have obligations. The league will kick off as agreed while we continue working on the legal framework," he said.

Mara Sugar CEO Omalla echoed the optimism, describing the talks as constructive and expressing confidence that regular dialogue would strengthen the relationship between clubs and the federation.

"The meeting was successful. We are very excited for the upcoming season. We're hopeful, and we also hope to have such meetings regularly to avoid misunderstandings," said Omalla.
