What began as a social media clash between two young men quickly turned into one of Kenya’s most talked-about sporting spectacles. By the end of the night, there was a clear winner.

Portifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, delivered a decisive knockout victory over Ferdinand Omondi during the headline bout of Vurugu Fight Night at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Saturday, 4 April.

The emphatic win not only secured him the Vurugu Championship Belt but also earned him one of the richest prize packages in Kenyan amateur boxing history.

Majembe’s rewards included Sh1,000,000 in cash, a brand-new Toyota Noah, a Taro GP1 sport bike valued at Sh385,000, and a one-year gym membership. An additional Sh1,200,000 pledged by a Kenyan woman during the build-up pushed his total earnings from the night to over Sh2.5 million.

Organized by comedian and content creator Oga Obinna, the event attracted a packed crowd at Kasarani and was streamed live, drawing nationwide attention.

What began as a TikTok rivalry between two fighters from modest backgrounds evolved into a full-scale entertainment and sporting event, backed by prominent figures in politics and business.

Among the key contributors was William Ruto, who pledged Sh1,000,000 to each fighter for training and sponsored 2,000 tickets for fans, bringing his total contribution to Sh4,000,000. Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri added Sh2,000,000 towards the event, while businessman Oketch Salah contributed Sh200,000. Oburu Oginga also made a cash donation and publicly shared his support on social media.

In the lead-up to the fight, Mbavu Destroyer, 25, captured public attention with flamboyant and unconventional preparations, including receiving prayers and Sh50,000 from controversial preacher Pastor Kanyari. His online antics drew both criticism and admiration.

In contrast, Majembe, 21, maintained a quieter approach, focusing on training and letting his performance in the ring speak for itself.

Tensions had already flared during the March 25 weigh-in, when the fighters had to be separated twice after a heated face-off turned physical. The viral moment significantly boosted interest and ticket sales heading into fight night.

Adding to the spectacle was live commentary from James Mwangi, widely known as DJ Afro, who made his debut as a live fight commentator. Famous for his Sheng-dubbed action films, DJ Afro brought his signature energy to ringside, further elevating the night’s entertainment value.
