Mathews was part of Gor Mahia's squad that travelled to Mombasa to take part in the ODM@20 Tournament that was held in the coastal city.

The 2022/23 Golden Glove winner captained Gor Mahia to a 4-3 shootout win over Shabana after a 1-1 draw in regular time in K’Ogalo’s first match, but was conspicuously missing during their final match against Bandari FC.

According to a statement by the club’s team doctor, Brian Odongo, through the club’s website, the shot-stopper was ill and admitted to emergency care.

“On the morning of Friday, Gad Mathews experienced abdominal pain that gradually worsened over time.

Due to the increasing severity of the pain, he was taken to the hospital, where he has been admitted for further investigations and treatment,” stated Dr Odongo.

K’Ogalo, who edged Bandari 1-0 to win the ODM@20 Tournament, left the coastal city on Saturday afternoon, except for the custodian, team captain Philemon Otieno and second team doctor Joash Odhiambo, in whose care Mathews is.

“While the rest of the squad departs for Nairobi today (Saturday) via the scheduled 3 pm train, Mathews’ condition does not permit the long journey.

He will be discharged later today and take a flight to the capital instead for further medical process,” reads part of the club’s statement.

Mathews, who was Gor Mahia’s first-choice goalkeeper last season, has been relegated to an understudy to Harambee Stars goalkeeper Bryne Omondi this campaign.

Omondi crossed over to the 21-time champions from Bandari FC in the course of Kenya’s campaign in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) that was held in August.

The other goalkeeper in K’Ogalo’s fold is former Kenya U23 custodian Kevin Omondi, who was in goal during the ODM@20 tournament final.

Everyone at Mozzart Sport wishes Gad Mathews a quick recovery.
