The attacking midfielder opened up on strange illness he developed on the even of the final staged at Kwale Stadium
Ian Simiyu's FKF Mozzart Bet Cup final performance for Tusker FC came against the backdrop of a major fitness scare that threatened to keep him out of the club's season-defining match.
The midfielder, who emerged as one of Tusker's key players during the second half of the campaign, fell ill on the eve of the final in Kwale and was left uncertain about his chances of featuring in the showdown.
According to the player, the illness significantly affected his preparation, leaving him unable to eat properly in the days leading up to the match.
"I was afraid I would not play in the final," Simiyu said in an interview with the club’s official website.
"I was really unwell and I could not even eat. At some point I prayed and wondered, how I could work so hard yet not be there for what I had prayed for for so long. But I had faith and belief and I tried to push myself. I just ate fruits and built strength and energy to be ready for the final," Simiyu adds.
With support from Tusker's medical team, headed by Dr. Wycliffe Makanga, Simiyu recovered in time to be available for selection.
He went on to play a decisive role in the final, scoring twice as Tusker secured victory and lifted the FKF Mozzart Bet Cup.
His display also saw him named the match's Most Valuable Player.
The performance capped a productive season for the midfielder, who established himself as an important figure in the squad's attacking play.
Reflecting on the team's achievement, Simiyu said the collective effort within the squad played a major role in their success.
"I am really delighted because I wanted this so bad. To win the Midfielder of the Tournament and the MVP were bonuses to an answered prayer. We really wanted this as a team and we managed to get it. Everyone in training was pushing hard and we kept each other on toes to make sure we were all aligned," he adds.
Simiyu finished the campaign with nine goal involvements, scoring eight goals and providing one assist.
