Former national U23 team striker Nicholas Kipkirui has opened up on the decision to join FKF Division One side Chebaiywa Lions after recovering from a prolonged illness.

Kipkirui joined Chebaiywa at the start of the season, making what many viewed as a career downgrade, as he was previously plying his trade in the FKF Premier League.

Kipkirui had been one of the best strikers in the top tier since making his debut in 2017 with Zoo FC.

The former Gor Mahia striker was taken ill in April 2025 and was diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage that saw him hospitalized for a couple of weeks.

Speaking to the press after Chebaiywa’s 3-0 defeat to KCB in the Mozzart Bet Cup Round of 16 match played on Sunday, 12 April at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, Kipkirui disclosed why he chose the Division One side after his recovery.

“I was sick, but I am thankful to God that I have since recovered. I did not want to start with the top flight, which comes with a lot of pressure, and therefore decided to start from the lower tier as I continue with my rehabilitation,” said Kipkirui.

The 29-year-old, who got an opportunity to face his former employers, also took time to reflect on Chebaiywa’s journey in the Mozzart Cup that included defeating National Super League (NSL) side Gucha Stars and a trip to Nairobi against the Bankers.

“I congratulate my team for the good run, and I can only urge us to continue with the hard work. Our chairman has equally worked hard to ensure we honour fixtures and sustain the team,” he added.

Chebaiywa have shifted their focus to the Division One league.

The team is hoping to punch a ticket to the National Super League.
