Supporters have expressed disappointment over losing a player from whom the club could have potentially earned a transfer fee.
FKF Premier League (FKFPL) Most Valuable Player (MVP) Enoch Morrison’s transfer from Gor Mahia to Sudanese giants Al Merrikh continues to elicit mixed reactions, especially after it emerged that the move was completed on a free transfer.
The Ghanaian midfielder established himself as one of the most dependable players in the K’Ogalo squad over the past two seasons and endeared himself to the club's faithful.
Morrison was one of the players who helped the club regain the FKFPL title from Kenya Police FC and, for his efforts, was named the league’s MVP and Midfielder of the Season. His impressive form ultimately earned him a move to Sudan.
With the club preparing to compete in the CAF Champions League (CAF CL), they had hoped to retain their best players but will now have to do so without Morrison, who opted to leave the club.
While the majority of fans are not opposed to his transfer, it has once again put the Gor Mahia management under the spotlight, with supporters expressing disappointment over losing a player the club could have potentially earned a transfer fee from.
However, the situation is not new to the club, as K’Ogalo have previously lost key players on free transfers, some of whom Mozzart Sport highlights in this piece.
Eric Marcelo Ouma
Harambee Stars defender Eric Marcelo Ouma burst onto the Kenyan top-flight scene after joining Gor Mahia in 2016 from Green Commandos upon completing his high school studies.
His energy down the left flank earned him the admiration of the club's faithful as he quickly established himself as a regular in the starting lineup.
With his talent never in doubt, Gor Mahia fans hoped to either enjoy his services for a prolonged period or see the club benefit financially from interest shown by numerous suitors.
However, the Green Army was left shocked when Marcelo departed on a free transfer in January 2017 to join Georgian outfit FC Kolkheti Poti following the expiry of his one-year contract with K’Ogalo.
Meddie Kagere
Rwandan international Meddie Kagere is widely regarded as one of the best strikers ever to wear the green jersey of Gor Mahia.
Kagere joined the club in January 2015 and formed a formidable attacking partnership with Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, helping Gor Mahia secure the league title.
Despite being a dependable member of the squad, reportedly delayed contract negotiations saw the prolific striker leave on a free transfer in June 2018 to join Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito
Ugandan international Geoffrey ‘Baba’ Kizito is another key player who left Gor Mahia on a free transfer, denying the club a potential transfer windfall.
Kizito formed a formidable midfield partnership with Collins 'Gattuso' Okoth and quickly became a fan favourite, largely due to his combative displays as Gor Mahia successfully retained the FKFPL title in 2014.
However, delayed salaries and financial constraints at the time led to a collapse in contract talks between the player and the club after his deal expired.
As a result, Kizito joined Vietnamese side Than Quang Ninh on a free transfer, much to the frustration of the club's supporters.
Kenneth Muguna
Harambee Stars midfielder Kenneth Muguna had two spells at Gor Mahia, initially between 2016 and 2017 before joining Albanian side FK Tirana in 2018.
His stay in Albania was brief, and he returned to K’Ogalo later that year.
During his second stint in particular, Muguna became an integral figure for the club and eventually rose to captain the side.
However, he declined to renew his contract upon its expiry in October 2022 following interest from Tanzanian side Azam FC, whom he eventually joined, leading to a strained relationship with sections of the Green Army.
Amos Nondi
The list of players who left Gor Mahia on free transfers also includes Harambee Stars midfielder Amos Nondi, who departed the club in July 2017.
Having joined the club in January 2016 as a youngster, Nondi's talent and versatility quickly made him a key asset as he impressed and attracted interest from abroad.
Eighteen months after joining Gor Mahia, Nondi completed a free-transfer move to Georgian side FC Kolkheti Poti, where he reunited with Marcelo.
