Gor Mahia have been dealt an early setback ahead of their 2026 CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign after club captain Sylvester Owino has been ruled out of Friday night's Group A opener against Rwanda's APR FC with an injury.
The Harambee Stars defender sustained a slight ankle sprain during training, forcing the technical bench to leave him out of the matchday squad as K'Ogalo begin their quest for a fourth regional title at Kigali's Amahoro Stadium.

In a statement released on the club's official channels, Gor Mahia confirmed Owino's absence, revealing that the skipper picked up the injury in the build-up to the eagerly anticipated encounter.
"Captain Sylvester Owino will miss tonight's CECAFA Kagame Cup Group A opener against APR FC at Amahoro Stadium after suffering a slight sprain during training," the club announced.
Head coach Charles Akonnor, however, moved to allay fears over the defender's condition, insisting the injury is not serious.
The Ghanaian tactician explained that the decision to rest Owino was purely precautionary as the club looks to safeguard one of its most influential players ahead of a demanding campaign.
"The injury is not bad, but we don't want to risk playing him. We would rather manage him well so that he recovers fully," Akonnor said ahead of the 8:00 p.m. kickoff.
With Owino unavailable, Frank Odhiambo has been handed the responsibility of filling the void on the left side of the heart of defence.
The former Kenya U-20 defender is expected to partner assistant captain Michael Kibwage in central defence as Gor Mahia seek a positive start to the tournament.
The defensive reshuffle comes as K'Ogalo prepare for one of the toughest opening fixtures in the competition against an experienced APR side playing on home soil.
Victory would hand Akonnor's men an early advantage in a highly competitive Group A, which also features Ugandan champions Vipers SC and Djibouti's Garde Républicaine.

Despite Owino's absence, Gor Mahia will be eager to make a strong statement in Kigali as they chase a fourth CECAFA Kagame Cup crown and build momentum ahead of the new domestic season.
The opening clash against APR is expected to provide an early indication of the club's readiness under Akonnor, with all eyes now on how K'Ogalo's reshuffled backline copes with the hosts' attacking threat.
