The win was a welcome response for Mwamba, who were coming off a narrow 22-19 defeat to newly-promoted Kisii RFC the previous weekend.
The victory propelled them to second place on the log with 11 points, just four shy of league leaders, Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA) Monks.
Kenya Sevens international Eugene Ojiambo opened the scoring just five minutes in, converting his own try to give Mwamba a 7–0 lead.
Allan Gumbo soon extended the advantage with a slick finish, and Ojiambo added the extras for 14–0. Moments later, Brian Kahura sliced through the defense for Mwamba’s third try, though Ojiambo’s conversion drifted wide, leaving the score at 19–0.
Mwamba then added a penalty through Ojiambo twenty minutes into the contest to take a commanding 22–0 lead at halftime.
After the break, Mwamba came out sharper. Ian Andaje dotted down in the far corner for an unconverted try, extending the lead to 27–0, before adding a second from a powerful maul, with Ojiambo’s conversion making it 34–0.
The visitors finally responded with a centre-post try, but the conversion bounced off the crossbar, keeping the score at 34–5. Fullback Shaquel Bosire then sealed the result with a late try, converted by Ojiambo, for a convincing 41–5 final score.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, an elated Murunga praised his team’s performance and the progress they had made in training.
“The boys played very well, and as a technical bench, we’re genuinely happy with what they delivered. Over the past week, we identified a few areas that needed fixing, and we put in a lot of work during training to address them,” he said.
The former Kenya Harlequin tactician was pleased that his team dominated set pieces, despite Western Bulls not being the strongest opposition.
“Our set pieces were excellent. We won most of our lineouts and had no issues with the scrums. Even though we didn’t face the strongest opposition, the boys handled everything well. The set pieces were sharp, and the plays off them clicked as we wanted,” he added.
Murunga went on to stress that seeing the team’s adjustments come to fruition on the field was a positive sign.
With three Championship matches done, Mwamba will now shift their focus to the Enterprise Cup quarterfinal against Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad on Saturday, 13 December at the Kenyatta University Grounds.
“It will be a different challenge, but if we maintain the same discipline, execution, and hunger, I believe we can deliver another strong performance,” he said.
Looking ahead to 2026, he emphasised the need to stay ahead in a tough campaign.
“After the Blak Blad match, we’ll do a thorough review and strategise because we know the coming year will be tough, and we need to stay ahead,” he concluded.
