Weru will be using the Embu 7s to gauge the preparedness of the boys ahead of the National Sevens Circuit.
Following a two-year hiatus owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, the National Sevens Circuit is edging ever so closer as Menengai Oilers head coach Gibson Weru is confident of a strong outing in the Embu 7s.
Oilers will be looking to carry their Kenya Cup form to the Circuit as they finished runners up after losing to Kabras Sugar in a thrilling final staged at the Bullring, Kakamega.
Weru revealed that they have prepared adequately for the circuit as he has been mostly focusing on improving the skill of his charges.
“We have prepared very well, we've had a solid five weeks of pre-season. I think the boys are in very good shape physically, the coach has done good work to make sure they are in very good fitness level.
In terms of skill, game awareness, and preparation, we've worked hard trying to bring a game plan that the boys understand, trying to put their skill at a higher level,” said Weru.
Despite not being part of the National Sevens Circuit, Oilers will look to defend the Embu Sevens after winning it back in 2019 when they edged Nakuru RFC 14-12.
Weru added that he wants his side to play an exciting brand of rugby and is looking to gauge the preparedness of his boys in the Embu 7s just before the Kabeberi 7s gets underway on Saturday 21 May.
“We want to play an exciting game, a game where we want to use the game more to create opportunities and space. We have worked on our defense and I think the boys have understood the pattern.
Embu7s is a great opportunity to see where we are with 2 or 3 weeks to the 7s Circuit. We can then fine tune before the circuit. I am excited with the squad we selected, very young guys,” added Weru.
