Despite AP securing an early lead with two unconverted tries, the hosts swiftly responded with two of their own, converting one to seal the win.
Sheldon Munoko, head coach of Project 61 (P61), commends his team's performance in the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) nationwide quarterfinal clash against Administration Police (AP) Warriors.
In a tightly contested match hosted by P61, the team orchestrated a remarkable second-half turnaround to clinch a 12-10 victory over the Warriors.
Despite AP securing an early lead with two unconverted tries, the hosts swiftly responded with two of their own, converting one to seal the win.
Munoko’s charges have been in sleek form since the season started. This was their first appearance in the nationwide league and they have not tasted a loss so far. They will be keen to make an appearance in the 2024/25 Championship League.
The nationwide league is the lowest in the ranking hierarchy and only two teams will be promoted to the Championship league.
“They made me proud. I am very happy for them. We are determined to climb to the Championship league, despite this being our maiden nationwide appearance. We believe that we can do it,” Munoko offered after the match.
Munoko is an experienced rugby player, having turned up for 10-time Impala Floodlights winners KCB Rugby, where they won several Kenya Cup, Impala Floodlights, Mwamba Cup, and ESS titles.
He was also a hard-hitting backrower for the varsity side of the University of Nairobi Mean Machine when they won the Impala Floodlights varsity league, the KRU Championship league, and the varsity league accolades.
At the semifinal stage, they will be joined by Sigalagala National Polytechnic, Zetech University, and Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) Marine.
The Oaks inched closer to a championship return after defeating former Kenya Cup side Kisii RFC 19-14 in the match played on Saturday at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
The Oaks came from behind to lead 11-6 at halftime following a try and two converted penalties. The score cancelled Kisii’s penalty and drop goal.
In the closing half, Kisii landed their first try that tied the scores before Zetech also responded with a try to lead 16-11.
Kisii cut the gap by a point with a penalty in the 71st minute for a tense ending. Zetech grabbed a penalty for a 19-14 lead and held on to win the match.
They will go back to the drawing board and right their wrongs as they await the 2024–25 season.
At the same time, the Sigalagala Pirates saw off Makueni RFC 22-6 to cruise to the semifinals. The Pirates managed four tries and converted one to win the game.
