Kulabu, as the club is affectionately known, were relegated at the end of the 2024/25 season after enjoying a continuous run in the Kenya Cup since 1999.

The team’s descent was confirmed on Saturday, 8 March, despite a convincing 29-15 victory over Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad. Relegation came due to an inferior head-to-head record against Impala RFC and a points differential, with both teams tied at 16 points.

Mwamba have a storied history in the local rugby scene, having produced some of the country’s finest players, including the Asego brothers- Larry, Lavin, and Chris Collins Injera, Humphrey Kayange, Dan Sikuta, and Kenya Sevens coach Kevin Wambua, among others.

The club first tasted relegation in 1996, before the establishment of the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Championship and Nationwide leagues, but has since been synonymous with rugby excellence.

Now preparing for a season in the KRU Championship, Mwamba RFC are determined to make an immediate return to the top flight.

Chairman Edwin Waita, who took over the reins just three weeks ago, has made it clear that rebuilding the club’s legacy is his top priority.

“We are a few days from the kick-off of the season, and preparations are in high gear. Our key focus this season is to immediately bounce back from the Championship to the Kenya Cup,” Waita told Mozzart Sport.

To strengthen the squad, Mwamba RFC have enlisted the services of former Kenya 7s tactician Paul Murunga and ex-Kenya 7s star Lavin Asego.

Murunga is in charge of the forwards, while Asego oversees the backs, bringing experience and tactical acumen to the team.

In addition to tactical reinforcement, the club has partnered with sports tech company Tisini, which will provide performance analytics and data-driven insights. According to Waita, integrating technology into training will be vital in monitoring player performance and optimizing game strategies.

“We first have to bring back that lost Mwamba rugby culture, the energy back to the club. We embarked on massive recruitment targeting specific positions, and we have also incorporated a few tacticians whom we believe will take us to the next level. We have also incorporated the services of a tech firm, Tisini, so that we get the data,” Waita explained.

Grassroots recruitment has also been a major focus, with a new wave of talent now forming the backbone of the squad. Waita emphasized that character development and maintaining the family-oriented culture of Mwamba RFC remain central to the club’s philosophy.

“My success is seeing young men and women in this club growing in character and how they play. Mwamba is known as a family club,” he added.

Mwamba RFC will kick off their KRU Championship campaign against NYS Spades on Saturday, 22 November.
