Sikuta landed a four-year contract at Halifax Rugby Club in Canada
The month of September ended on a high for former Kabras RFC captain Daniel Sikuta who announced his departure from Kenya Cup defending champions to join another club overseas.
Skubez left the Millers on Bosman rule following the expiry of his contract. He had been a key part of the Kabras squad since 2016, contributing to the club’s success by winning the National 7s Circuit, one Charity Cup, two Enterprise Cup titles, and two Kenya Cup titles during his seven-year tenure.
He captained Kabras RFC during the 2021/22 season, leading them to win two Kenya Cup titles, back-to-back Enterprise Cup titles, and one National 7s Circuit title. He is known for his hard-hitting tackles and ball-carrying abilities.
In an exclusive with Mozzart Sport, the flanker explained that he landed a four-year contract at Halifax Rugby Club in Canada.
Sikuta further noted that adjusting to a completely new environment came with its own set of challenges both on and off the field. Sikuta is adjusting to a new play style as well as the cultural differences and way of life in Canada.
Despite challenges, the flanker was grateful for the kindness and warmth of his immediate surroundings which included his new teammates and the coaching staff.
"It is a new environment with few challenges but I have adapted to it. There are also different styles of plays but I am catching up. They have welcomed me well and they are friendly people," Sikuta told Mozzart Sport.
One of the primary challenges Sikuta had to overcome in his new role was getting used to the winter climate, which was very different from what he was used to when he was playing for Kabras RFC.
Unlike his previous stints in various countries for tournaments that were of shorter durations like the HSBC World Rugby 7s series, this time, he had to adjust to the Canadian winter for an extended period.
"The weather is my main challenge since winter has just started now and we are off-season but generally, I like it here. I have traveled across the world but on short stays during IRB 7s series tournaments but I will be here for a while so I have to adapt," he posited.
In addition to his impressive on-field achievements with his new team, the former Kenyan player has taken on a commendable role by enrolling in the junior coaching management program at the club.
"I am ready to explore more and nurture other young talents here in the near future as I'm enrolled in the junior coaching management program at the club," he disclosed.
Sikuta played for Mwamba RFC between 2010 and 2016 before joining Kabras RFC in August 2016 where he diligently served until his latest move.
He was part of the Kenya 7s team that won the Africa Seven's Cup in 2013. He also won the Safari Seven's Cup in 2018 and the overall Local Seven's circuit Champion in 2017.
At the international level, Skubez has played 159 matches and scored 35 tries and 175 points in the HSBC World 7s series. His CV includes the 2018 Hong Kong and Vancouver 7s HSBC World 7s finalist.
He has captained the Kenya 15s national team and has 34 caps. The former Kenya 7s International also has three caps with 2023 Safari 7s runners-up Samurai Barracudas. In 2011, he represented Kenya in the Under 19 category.
