Who saw this coming? LeBron is going to Philadelphia

LeBron James is heading to Philadelphia. After weeks of speculation, the decision has finally been made—the King is set to wear a Philadelphia 76ers jersey. One of the greatest players in NBA history carefully weighed his options, with the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers widely considered the frontrunners. In the end, however, he chose the 76ers, according to renowned NBA insider Shams Charania.

James has also agreed to by far the smallest salary of his career. He signed a two-year, $8 million contract, which includes a player option for a third season. In the end, he stayed true to his word, signing for what is essentially a bargain deal. As a result, Philadelphia is shaping up to be a terrifying force next season—perhaps even the favorite to win the NBA championship.

The saga began the moment LeBron officially informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he would not be returning. It quickly became one of the biggest stories of the offseason, dragging on for weeks. Eventually, it became clear that James was simply waiting for the FIFA World Cup to conclude before shifting his full attention to his basketball future and making his final decision.

From the very beginning, a long list of teams was linked with the four-time NBA champion. His agent, Rich Paul, repeatedly explained that they were evaluating what each franchise could offer LeBron and, in return, what LeBron could bring to each organization.

One by one, the candidates were eliminated. First came the Denver Nuggets, then the Minnesota Timberwolves, before it became increasingly obvious that the Golden State Warriors were also out of the running.

Golden State had initially appeared to be the dream destination. The plan was for LeBron to team up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, while the Warriors would also acquire Anthony Davis, creating a veteran superteam. That idea quickly fell apart, leaving only a handful of realistic destinations.

As the offseason progressed, most analysts, insiders and former players believed the race had narrowed to just two teams. The Miami Heat were widely considered the favorites and even mistakenly scheduled a YouTube livestream announcing what was supposed to be LeBron's introductory press conference.

The stream was quickly deleted, but sportsbooks reacted immediately, making Miami the overwhelming betting favorite. There was also strong speculation about an emotional return to Cleveland, where James could finish his career, but that move never materialized either.

Lurking in the background the entire time were the Philadelphia 76ers, arguably the team with the most to offer.

LeBron seriously considered joining Philadelphia back in 2018, when the prospect of teaming up with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid was on the table. Instead, he chose the Lakers and spent several memorable seasons in Los Angeles. Once he decided to leave, however, the 76ers once again emerged as genuine contenders.

During Fanatics Fest, James even jokingly said that he "trusts the process"—the famous slogan associated with Philadelphia. He laughed it off by claiming he had been saying that long before Embiid was even born, but in hindsight, many now believe he accidentally hinted at his eventual decision.

As it turns out, it was no joke. LeBron is heading to Philadelphia.

The 76ers now look absolutely loaded. They recently acquired Jaylen Brown in a blockbuster trade involving Paul George, and when you add Tyrese Maxey, one of the league's elite point guards and an All-Star, alongside Joel Embiid—provided he can stay healthy—and now LeBron James, it is difficult to argue against Philadelphia being the team to beat next season.

And that's without even mentioning promising young guard VJ Edgecombe, who rounds out what could be one of the most talented starting lineups in the NBA. On paper, the 76ers have suddenly become a true powerhouse.
