Record FKF Women Premier League champions Vihiga Queens maintained their perfect start to the 2023-24 Football Kenya Federation Women Premier League after playing out a 1-1 stalemate against the newly-formed Kenya Police Bullets at Moi Stadium, Kisumu on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams went into the match from empathic wins last weekend with the Queens overcoming an early setback last time out from League minnows Kibera Soccer Ladies to clinch the tie 3-1 whereas Police ladies annihilated new kids on the block Bungoma Superstars 5-2 to record first win of the new campaign.
Despite a slow start to the match, Vihiga Queens, under the guidance of Coach Boniface Nyamunyamu, patiently settled in the game with clinical finesse and experience but received resistance from Police back line of Quinter Owiti and Hellen Ochieng that dealt perfectly with all the balls from the attacking Queens to keep them at bay heading into the breather.
Vihiga looked dangerous after the break just as they have been for the better part of the season and it soon paid off as Tumaini Waliula took advantage of Bullets’ slackness in defense to punish them with a clinical finish in the 50th minute and his third of the season.
The celebrations lasted for only six minutes as the law enforcers in a display of courage and determination composed to settle the scores through Mercy Njeri in the 56th minute with a powerful header from Lydia Okoth cross.
Both sides fought back with commitment to nick away all the three points but the defenders put their lives in line clearing all the balls and keeping the speedy attackers at bay to ensure the two women football heavy weights shared spoils at the final whistle.
The draw takes the four times FKFWPL winners Vihiga Queens top of the table one point ahead of Bunyore Starlets who squire out against Zetech Sparks on Sunday while Police Bullets climb the ladder to 3rd on the log tied on points with Nakuru Queens City.
FKF Women Premier League action continues on Sunday with five matches scheduled. At Imani Grounds in Nairobi, fifth-placed Zetech Sparks will settle scores against Bunyore Starlets as league debutants Kibera Soccer travel away to Wadadia in a match penciled for Mumias Complex.
Last season’s runners up Gaspo Women will be home against Bungoma Queens while Madira Soccer Assassins will get underway their top-flight chapter with Trans Nzoia Falcons clash at the Ndura Sports Complex. The last encounter of the day will see Ulinzi Starlets settle scores against Nakuru City Queens at ASK Nakuru Showgrounds
