Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has taken a clear stand on the FKF Premier League title race this season, stating that he wants and hopes his former club, AFC Leopards, can finally end their nearly three-decade-long wait for a league title.

Traditional rivals AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia are locked in a tight title race. After 26 games, K'Ogalo lead the pack with 57 points, while Ingwe, who have played one more match, are just two points behind.

There are eight games remaining for Gor Mahia and seven for Leopards before the season concludes, with the title race looking set to go down to the wire.

Wanyama, who recently retired from football, has been closely following the FKF Premier League this season. He has been a familiar face at Nyayo Stadium, Police Sacco Stadium, and the Kasarani Annex, catching glimpses of local action.

When asked where his loyalty lies in the title race, the former Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder did not hesitate to back his old club. He expressed his delight at the team’s performance and his hope that they can clinch the league title this season.

“That's my club, and wherever I can help, I'll help. You know this season they have been doing so well. So I’m praying they continue like that, and hopefully we can get the league this season,” Wanyama told Pitchside with Tabu Peter.

On whether he plans to coach Leopards in the near future, Wanyama, who holds a UEFA B licence, was cautious but did not entirely rule it out.

“I don't want to focus just on coaching immediately. I want to gain experience and learn as much as possible, and then when the time comes, I will come to AFC Leopards. Yeah, of course,” he said.

The FKF Premier League takes a break this weekend to pave the way for the Mozzart Bet Cup before resuming next week for the title run-in.

Gor Mahia have 21 league titles to their name, nine more than AFC Leopards, and they are determined to reclaim the crown, which they lost last season to Kenya Police FC.
