Vyner, who had recently established himself in the starting lineup, was an unused substitute as Wrexham were outclassed in a crucial encounter between two sides chasing promotion play-off spots.

The 28-year-old's absence was notable as the Red Dragons struggled defensively and were ultimately overwhelmed at the STōK Cae Ras.

The visitors made their intent clear from the start, striking the woodwork twice before eventually taking the lead through Kuryu Matsuki in the 12th minute. Flynn Downes doubled Southampton’s advantage shortly after, putting Wrexham under early pressure.

Despite the setback, the hosts found a way back into the contest before the break, with Josh Windass finishing calmly after good work from Kieffer Moore to make it 2-1 and give the home side hope heading into halftime.

Wrexham began the second half brightly, pushing for an equaliser, but their momentum was short-lived. Cyle Larin restored Southampton’s two-goal cushion just after the hour mark, capitalising on a defensive lapse to make it 3-1.

From there, the game slipped further away from the hosts. Ross Stewart added a fourth with a well-taken header before Finn Azaz sealed the rout with a fifth goal moments later, completing a dominant performance for the visitors.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson had made changes to his starting XI, including bringing in Nathan Broadhead in place of Vyner, but the reshuffle failed to deliver the desired impact.

The defeat leaves Wrexham seventh on the table with 64 points, now two points off the play-off places, dealing a significant blow to their promotion ambitions.

Wrexham will travel to face Birmingham City in their next league fixture on Sunday afternoon.

Ian Otieno

Elsewhere in South Africa, Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno clocked 90 minutes to help Richards Bay to a 2-1 victory over Stellenbosch in the Premier Soccer League.

The hosts made a bright start and took an early lead in the opening seven minutes, Sanele Barns setting the tone for a fast-paced encounter.

However, Stellenbosch responded well and found their equaliser in the 10th minute when Genino Palace calmly finished to bring the visitors back level and restore balance to the match.

Richards Bay's breakthrough came in the 53rd minute when they were awarded a penalty, and Moses Mthembu stepped up confidently to convert from the spot.

His strike ultimately proved to be the winner, as Richards Bay held firm defensively to secure an important victory despite late pressure from Stellenbosch.
