Despite their current struggles, Wanyama remains confident that the North Londoners can survive the drop.
The UEFA Europa League holders currently sit 17th on the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone. With several tough matches on the horizon, the club faces a difficult run-in.
Last week, Tottenham appointed Italian manager Roberto De Zerbi in a bid to turn their season around, replacing Igor Tudor, who was sacked after a six-week winless stint in the league that included the club’s exit from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Atlético Madrid.
Wanyama, who played for Spurs between 2016 and 2020, weighed in on the team’s difficulties, highlighting the impact of injuries.
"It's been difficult for the coaches at Tottenham this season because of the amount of injuries they have had. They have had 10 to 15 players out at different times, and that certainly didn't help," Wanyama told the Daily Mail.
"The club has tried different approaches, but it's tough when you don't have the full squad back together."
The 34-year-old, who recently called time on his glittering career, believes the team can still turn their season around with key players returning from injury.
"If they can get Kudus, Maddison, and Bentancur back, they can play a big part in turning things around. Also, getting Solanke back into a rhythm will make them much more solid as a unit when they have that threat," he added.
On his relationship with the club, Wanyama revealed he has remained in touch with Spurs’ staff and hopes to attend the upcoming match against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, 18 April.
"I still keep in touch with some of the medical staff at Spurs and people who work in the offices. Hopefully, I'll be over for the Brighton game to support them," he said.
