Ulinzi Stars have confirmed the appointment of Stephen Ochola as the club’s interim coach, taking over from Dunstan Nyaudo, who was shown the door on Monday, 27 October, after five matches at the helm this season.

Ochola returns to the club after a three-year absence, having previously managed the Soldiers during the first leg of the 2021/22 season before being dismissed due to an inconsistent run of results.

He was replaced in the second leg by 2010 title-winning coach Benjamin Nyangweso, who has since retired from the military.

The club issued a statement announcing the former captain’s appointment as coach on an interim basis. His possible confirmation to the role will depend on his performance during this temporary tenure.

“Ulinzi Stars FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Coach Stephen Ocholla as the Interim Head Coach of the club.

Coach Ocholla brings a wealth of experience and leadership, having served both as a player and coach within Kenyan football,” read part of the club’s statement.

The club further explained that they settled on Ochola, who previously handled their women’s side, because of his deep understanding of the game, discipline, and commitment to excellence.

"His deep understanding of the game, discipline, and commitment to excellence align perfectly with the values and vision of Ulinzi Stars FC.

We warmly welcome Coach Ocholla back to the Ulinzi family and wish him every success as he leads the team into a new chapter,” the statement added.

Ochola takes charge of the team at a difficult time. Ulinzi Stars started the season positively with a 1-0 win over Murang’a Seal, followed by back-to-back draws against Kariobangi Sharks and Kenya Police FC.

However, consecutive defeats to Mara Sugar FC and Kakamega Homeboyz sealed Nyaudo’s fate.

The tactician will lead the team for the first time on Wednesday afternoon when the Soldiers host Bidco United at the Ulinzi Sports Complex.
