One of the greatest classics of European and world football takes place tonight, as we witness France and Spain square off in the World Cup semi-finals
The World Cup has finally arrived at the stage every football fan had circled from the very beginning. Thirty-three days of drama, upsets and unforgettable moments have narrowed the field to just four teams—and fittingly, they are the four biggest names left in world football.
France versus Spain. A World Cup semi-final that could easily pass as the final itself.

One nation is chasing history. The other believes a new golden generation is ready to write it.
France are aiming to become only the third country ever, after Brazil and Germany, to reach three consecutive World Cup finals. Spain, meanwhile, are looking to return to the biggest stage for the first time since conquering the world in 2010, hoping that a new era led by Rodri, Pedri and Lamine Yamal can match the achievements of Xavi, Iniesta and company.
If there has been one question dominating this tournament, it has been remarkably simple: who can stop France?
Didier Deschamps' side have looked every inch the favourites. Ruthless in front of goal, organised without the ball and frightening whenever space opens up, Les Bleus have marched through the competition looking like a team destined for another final.
At the heart of everything is Kylian Mbappe.
The French captain has once again reminded the football world why he remains one of the game's defining superstars. Every defence has entered matches with the same objective—stop Mbappe—and almost every defence has failed.
Even when opponents succeed in limiting him, France simply attack from somewhere else. Ousmane Dembele has enjoyed arguably the best international tournament of his career, Michael Olise continues to create danger every time he touches the ball, while Desire Doue has emerged as yet another weapon in one of the deepest attacking units at this World Cup.

That is exactly why Spain represent such an intriguing opponent.
Unlike most teams France have faced, La Roja are unlikely to engage in an open exchange of attacks. They don't want chaos. They want control.
Luis de la Fuente's side have mastered the art of suffocating opponents through possession, often making rivals spend long stretches chasing shadows before patiently carving open the smallest defensive gaps. Their football may not always be spectacular, but it is relentlessly effective.
Keeping the ball has become Spain's greatest defensive weapon. The less France see possession, the fewer opportunities Mbappe has to explode into open space. It is a simple idea in theory, but one that very few teams have managed to execute successfully.

Everything begins with Rodri. The Manchester City midfielder has once again demonstrated why so many regard him as the world's finest holding midfielder. He dictates the rhythm, controls the tempo and almost never makes the wrong decision. Around him, Pedri provides imagination, Dani Olmo constantly searches for dangerous spaces, while every attack seems to carry the possibility of ending at the feet of football's newest superstar—Lamine Yamal.
The teenager has yet to completely explode at this tournament, but that may only make him even more dangerous. Every great player seems to reserve their defining moment for the biggest occasion, and there are few stages larger than a World Cup semi-final.
❗️ You’re turning 19, you wear the number 19, and the World Cup final is on 19 July… 3 numbers, and it would be the 3rd time you’ve beaten France. Do you believe in numerology?

Spain's challenge is obvious: they must prevent France from turning the game into a track meet. France's challenge may be even harder: they must somehow disrupt the most technically gifted midfield still left in the competition.
That battle could decide everything.
Rodri, Pedri and Olmo will attempt to overwhelm France numerically, forcing Kone and Adrien Rabiot to spend long periods without the ball. If Spain establish control in midfield, they can dictate every phase of the game. But if France manage to recover possession and release Mbappé, Dembele or Olise into open grass, the match could change in seconds.
Momentum certainly favours Les Bleus. France have looked like the tournament's most complete team, ranking among the highest scorers while creating more clear-cut opportunities than almost anyone else. Their attack has overwhelmed opponents in a variety of ways, making them incredibly difficult to prepare for. Stop one threat, and another immediately appears.
Yet Spain possess something equally valuable—an identity. They know exactly how they want to play, regardless of the opponent. They trust their system, their midfield and their ability to dictate matches through intelligence rather than pure athleticism. It is a philosophy that has brought them to within one victory of another World Cup final.
This semi-final is more than Mbappe versus Yamal.
It is power against precision.
Speed against patience.
Direct football against total control.
Two footballing philosophies, two European giants and one ticket to the World Cup final.
Only one dream survives tonight.
