The club will have to decide what to do with its important players as soon as possible
It‘s only February, but Borussia Dortmund‘s sporting director Sebastian Kehl probably feels it‘s June already. Former player and now the club‘s executive has six unresolved mysteries – six first team players whose future is up in the air and needs to be resolves ASAP. Both the club and the players need a solution in order to plan for the future and deal with possible transfers.

As per Bild, a number of footballers in the starting 11 are at the crossroads and need to either extend their contracts or to leave in June and Borussia need to find a suitable replacement. Let‘s start with the captain. Emre Can is the leader in the locker room and experienced player who can cover the central defender spot and play in midfield. Coach Niko Kovač already told the club that he would like Can to stay, but he biggest problems are injuries. Can is injury prone and is against sidelined for another three weeks. With his salary and injury record, he will either be sold or his wage will be cut in the next contract.
Then there are two midfielder stars: Julian Brandt and Felix Nmecha. The first one was clear that he doesn‘t want to drag his decision and wait for June and July, but said that "such a fundamental decision needs to be well thought out“. Dortmund want to extend him and already have a contract ready for him, but the player wants a clarification of his role within the team. The last few weeks have shown that Brandt is no longer a guaranteed starter, but rather alternates between the bench and the starting eleven. Nmecha is among those players who don‘t have a problem with a contract length but could depart due to his good displays. He has an English passport and his brother plays for Leeds so he is looking at the Premier League transfer. Manchester United and Tottenham are interested in him and if they offer 60 million euros (or more) in June, he could leave. Borussia consider him a key player and would like to keep him if possible.
Serhou Guirassy and Karim Adeyemi also fall in this category. Both players are regular starters and Dortmund would like to keep them both but will have no problem selling them either, if a good offer comes along. For Adeyemi the situation is a bit urgent as his contract is up in 2027 so in June, he will extend or be sold. The German international is trying to prolong the contract talks as he is looking at possible offers from England while Borussia would like to sell him, but not for less than 60 million, but that won‘t be easy, considering he has only one year left on his contract. Guirassy already inserted a possible exit in his contract The Guinea international can leave the club in June for a specific release clause, which is between 40 and 50 million euros. He is currently getting back into form and if he finishes the season like he did in 2025, Borussia will sell him for that kind of money without a problem.
