The Borussia Dortmund midfielder of Nigerian origins, capped at youth levels for England, is now on the verge of pledging his international future to the country of his birth.
Born in Eisenstadt to Nigerian parents, Chukwuemeka spent his early childhood in Austria before moving to England, where he rose through the ranks at Chelsea and Aston Villa. The 22-year-old has yet to appear for England's senior side, making the switch straightforward under FIFA rules. He is also eligible for France, but Austria is now leading the race to secure his services.
Chukwuemeka's rise at Dortmund has been steady since his recent move from Chelsea. This season, he has contributed three goals in 26 appearances across all competitions, including six Bundesliga starts, showcasing the midfield versatility Austria is eager to harness.
Under the guidance of former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick, Austria sealed their place at the 2026 World Cup by topping Group H ahead of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Romania. Chukwuemeka could soon find himself at Levi's Stadium in California on June 16, when Austria face Jordan, before clashes with Algeria and Argentina, potentially marking the start of a new chapter in both his career and Austrian football history.
