Harambee Starlets set to cash in big after CAF announces new WAFCON prize money

Just for participating, the Kenyan side is set to pocket a base amount of Ksh19 million
Kenya women’s national football team - Harambee Starlets - could earn a record-breaking Ksh259 million in prize money, should they end up clinching the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) set for Morocco from Sunday, 26 July to Sunday, 16 August.

This comes after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced a significant increase in prize money for the biennial continental tournament, which has attracted 16 teams.
In the new breakdown, winners of the WAFCON are now guaranteed to take home USD 2 million (Ksh259 million), which is a 100-percent increase from the previous winners’ prize money of USD 1 million (Ksh129 million).
In regards to the Runner-up, CAF has increased its previous prize money by 50 percent to USD 750,000 (Ksh97 million), with third-place finishers taking home USD 500,000 (Ksh64 million), presenting a 43 percent increase.
Meanwhile, each of the 16 teams participating at the WAFCON tournament will receive USD 150,000 (Ksh19 million) in participation funding, up from the USD 125,000 (Ksh16 million) receives in the previous edition.
Therefore, the total prize money from the pot, has increased by 67 percent from USD 3.475 Million (Ksh450 million) to USD 5.8 Million (Ksh 751 million)
Harambee Starlets, who are currently in Miramas, France for their final bit of preparation, are taking part in their only second WAFCON tournament, following their debut qualification in 2016.
The Beldine Odemba-coached outfit has been placed in a tough Group A, where they will come up against hosts Morocco, Algeria and Senegal.
Having failed to secure a win in their debut, the side will hope to get several steps better, with beautiful rewards awaiting them at the end of the tournament.
With the new cash prizes, CAF continues to show its intent of growing women’s football, with the prize money of the winner increasing year-by-year since the current leadership assuming office, by 900 percent.
The total prize money, on the other hand, has increased by 495 percent.
