K’Ogalo failed to find the back of the net despite coming into the encounter in fine scoring form, following their 4-1 win against Kariobangi Sharks in the previous match.

For Shabana, the result offered relief after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Nairobi United at the same venue in the preceding fixture.

Speaking after the match, the Ghanaian tactician admitted that securing a point in Kisii was no small achievement, citing the intensity and history that often surrounds fixtures at Gusii Stadium.

A draw here is something we can be proud of,” Akonnor said.

This is always a very difficult place to come. It is a derby-type of game, and the environment is challenging. What mattered most for us was not to lose,” he added.

While acknowledging that his side had chances to win the match, the Gor Mahia coach was pleased with his players’ approach and resilience, particularly in the second half.

Both teams created chances, but for us, we needed to stay strong. The second half was very good from our side and we are happy to walk away with a result,” he remarked.

Akonnor was also quick to praise his team’s fighting spirit, insisting that attitude played a key role in navigating a demanding encounter.

The fighting spirit was very important. This is not a match where you relax. You have to fight every minute. The boys did very well in that aspect and that is why we are content with the result,” praised the former international.

The match was evenly balanced in the opening stages as both sides tested each other defensively, though neither could convert from the chances created.

Gor Mahia were forced into an early change when Ben Stanly was withdrawn after an injury, with debutant Jackson Dwang replacing him.

Gor emerged more assertive after the interval, pushing numbers forward in search of a breakthrough.

Felix Mboya led the line, supported by Samuel Kapen on the right and Musa Shariff on the left. The trio gave the Shabana defence work to do, but could not get the ball past the line.

Despite their dominance in spells, K’Ogalo were unable to find a decisive touch in front of goal as Shabana held firm to secure a valuable point in front of their home fans.
