The highly attended encounter was evenly balanced, with both teams creating a few clear-cut chances but failing to find the breakthrough.
In the end, the contest ended in a stalemate, leaving each side to settle for a share of the spoils, even though both would have hoped for maximum points.
The result briefly lifted Gor Mahia to the top of the league standings with 27 points before AFC Leopards reclaimed pole position following their emphatic 4-0 victory over Tusker FC. Shabana, meanwhile, remains fourth on the table with 24 points.
Speaking after the match, Okidi described the outcome as fair but admitted it fell short of Shabana’s expectations, especially after their previous home defeat to Nairobi United. He pointed to the team’s lack of cutting edge in front of goal as their biggest weakness.
“It has been a fair result for us, although we wanted maximum points, considering we are coming from a loss here against Nairobi United.
We dominated the entire game and were excellent in all departments except the attack, which we are going to work on because we need to score goals,” Okidi said.
Shabana have now lost four league matches this season, all of them at home, and the former Nakuru Bucks head coach believes the draw against Gor Mahia marks a turning point.
“We have disappointed our fans here at home, and I believe this is the last time Shabana will fail to win at home.
We will fight and work hard to win our home matches and combine that with away victories, and that will put us in a good position to win the league,” he added.
Akonnor, on his part, admitted the contest was cagey and welcomed the hard-earned point, noting how difficult it is to play at Gusii.
“Both teams did not create many big chances, so the game could have gone either way. It was important that we did not lose because Shabana at home is a difficult team.
The second half was better, the fighting spirit was good, and the boys did well. We are content with the result,” Akonnor said.
Gor Mahia will return to action on Wednesday with a league clash against Murang’a Seal, who are currently on an impressive run, having gone ten matches without defeat.
