‘Ratcliffe offered me a new contract’

Manchester boss tried to play down his meeting with the club's co-owner
Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe landed in Carrington by helicopter on Thursday to hold a series of meetings, including one with the Portuguese coach. Officially, all of this had been planned in advance, but when the owner shows up during a crisis and sits down for coffee with the manager, it usually means the smell of ‘gunpowder’ is already in the dressing room. Ratcliffe, at least publicly, still insists he has “full confidence” in Amorim—but we all know what that phrase usually means in football: another two or three winless matches will likely be the final straw.
When asked if he had a conversation with the co-owner and what they discussed, Manchester coach replied with a sense of humor.
“New contract. He was offering me a new contract. No, it was normal things, to show his support, explaining that it is a long project. He said many times this is my first season. For me it's not. But normal things. I spoke with him, Omar and Jason, trying to see all the data around the team. So a normal meeting and we had several. But in this moment, it's normal people pay attention to that" said Amorim with a big laugh.
But come Saturday night, he might not laugh anymore. United host Chelsea on Saturday afternoon at Old Trafford, in a match that already feels decisive for Amorim, given that the team currently sits 14th in the Premier League table, after finishing last season in 15th place and missing out on European competitions with a defeat in the Europa League final. There are rumors that he has three games to turn things around and that this one is the first of the three, but not all agree on that. Famous English striker Alan Shearer believes that Amorim could be sacked much sooner.
“Something must improve rapidly. Man United can't be lingering in 14th/15th/16th in the Premier League. There hasn't been an improvement at all up to now and that can't continue with what they spent. There has to be something that gets them going and if that doesn't happen quickly then everyone knows the rules when it comes to football management. It's on both the manager and players but I do think there's a lot in the system and despite what the manager says, he's not going to change his ways, he'll stick to that system. He's either going to die on his sword or get the success that he needs. At the minute it looks really negative, and I don't think a lot of those players are suited to the system. Amorim knows, he believes, and he will either keep or lose his job. It's a really interesting weekend and one where he can't take another beating like they did last weekend” said the former Newcastle striker.
