The match comes at a crucial point in the season, with both sides struggling for consistency and in urgent need of points as the campaign heads into its final stretch.
Nairobi United, currently 10th on the table, are winless in their last three matches, suffering defeats to AFC Leopards and Ulinzi Stars before drawing with APS Bomet.
Mara Sugar are in a similar position, also without a win in their last three, managing two draws and one loss, setting up what promises to be a tightly contested encounter.
In their most recent outing, Nairobi United played out to a 0-0 draw against APS Bomet in Kisii in a match that had to be completed over two days after heavy rains forced the second half to be played on Sunday morning.
Mara Sugar, meanwhile, fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against KCB at Nyayo National Stadium.
On the standings, Nairobi United sit 10th with 34 points, while Mara Sugar are 12th with 30 points, further underlining how evenly matched the two sides are heading into this fixture.
The first leg, played in Awendo, saw Nairobi United claim all three points courtesy of a solitary goal from Ovella Ochieng. However, the winger will play no part in the remainder of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery following an injury sustained in January against Azam FC at Nyayo Stadium.
Both coaches head into the match under pressure. Nairobi United head coach Godfrey Oduor is yet to fully convince since taking over at the Mozzart Bet Cup holders, while Mara Sugar’s Francis Xavier has struggled to steady the team since taking over from Edward Manoah. Another poor result for either side could intensify scrutiny on their positions.
Nairobi United will look to in-form striker Benson Omala for goals, with the forward enjoying a strong scoring run in recent weeks. He will be supported by playmaker Kevin Wangaya, while Uganda international Mustafa Kizza offers versatility on the flank or at left back.
For Mara Sugar, Jimmy Owili, who leads the team’s assist charts, alongside Alex Imbusia and Dennis Cheruiyot, will be key attacking threats as they seek to turn their fortunes around.
