Omondi, who initially served as the team’s assistant coach, is said to have been handed the gig by the club’s management board, who later confirmed his appointment to the joint forum of players and technical bench during their Performance Review meeting on Friday, 28 November.
Under Omondi in the new-look bench will be fellow CAF B licence holders Jaffer Salim and Joseph Mbugi, who will serve as the first and second assistant coaches respectively.
The managerial reshuffle, on the other hand, confirms the rumored exit of Omollo, who as per multiple sources is expected to be unveiled as the new manager for another top-tier club APS Bomet.
Omollo, who was in his second season at Posta, is reported to have proceeded on 30 days terminal leave, awaiting the expiry of his contract on 31 December.
Omondi’s appointment is one laced with continuity, as it marks the third time the former Kariobangi Sharks assistant coach has been elevated to the top post on an interim basis,
In 2022, he took over temporarily after the then coach Salim Ali left the club, and he served in the same capacity in January this year, when Mailmen parted ways with Bernard Kawinzi, a process that later led to Omollo’s appointment on a permanent basis.
Omondi, who also coached the defunct Sony Sugar, is an experienced man in Kenyan football having led among other clubs: NSL side Naivas, Mathare United, Nairobi Stima, KCB and MYSA.
Unlike previous iterations where he has had to dig the club out of relegation, Omondi comes at a time where Rangers are sixth on the log after 10 matches, but on the back of a run of six games without victory.
His first task, therefore, will be to steer the side back to winning form, and that comes swiftly on on Monday, 1 December, when Posta play away to Bidco United at Kasarani Annex from 1600 EAT.
