After a four-month hiatus, the WPL resumed with the Law Enforcers facing Kayole Starlets at Utalii Grounds from 1300 hrs.
The match was also Police head coach David Vijago’s debut since his appointment on Tuesday, 30 September, to take over from Harambee Starlets head coach Beldine Odemba, who parted ways with the club after failing to qualify for the CAF Women's Champions League group stage.
Police began the match on a high and got their reward in the eighth minute when they scored this season’s first goal courtesy of an own goal from Lavyn Achola.
The Law Enforcers were at it again, five minutes later, through Puren Alukwe, whose shot was punched into the net by goalkeeper Pauline Kathuruh.
The two early goals by Police gave them confidence for the remainder of the half, where they went ahead to showcase possession-based football and take their 2-0 lead to the interval.
Kayole resumed the second half as a much better side, pinning Police into their own half as the David Vijago-coached side opted to protect their lead.
However, Kayole’s efforts paid off in the second minute of second-half added time when Euphraiser Shilwatso scored from a direct free kick to ensure she halved her team’s deficit.
Ulinzi Starlets 0-0 Kibera Soccer Women
In a fierce battle at the Marist International University in Karen, Ulinzi Starlets and Kibera Soccer Women battled to a goalless draw.
While the military side looked the stronger of the two teams, they could not find a way of breaking the Kibeta backline.
The reigning FKF Cup champions lost a number of their key players and their head coach, Vijago, who joined the league’s defending champions.
Trinity Starlets 4-2 Kisumu All Starlets
At Comboni Polytechnic Grounds in Gilgil, Trinity Starlets began the season with a resounding 4-2 victory over Kisumu All Starlets.
Trinity broke the deadlock in the 15th minute through captain Elizabeth Muteshi before Eglay Mukwana added a second in the 34th minute.
Mukwana doubled her goal tally in the 41st minute to ensure Trinity had a 3-0 lead at the break.
The forward proved to be prolific just at the start of the second half, completing her hat trick and taking the scores to 4-0.
However, laxity and lack of concentration at the back allowed the lakeside club to score two goals in the 67th and 89th minutes.
Zetech Sparks 2-1 Kisped Queens
Elsewhere, varsity side Zetech Sparks began their season with a 2-1 victory over Kisped Queens.
Zetech found the back of the net through Monalizer Owenga and Sheryl Muyera, with Kisped scoring through Cynthia Okwado.
