Football Kenya Federation Vice President Doris Petra has stressed the significance of introducing the game to school-going girls for early nurturing.
Petra made the remarks after gracing the Women’s Football Campaign event that took place in Lodwar, Turkana County, on Friday.
22 primary schools participated in the event, which is part of the program that primarily focuses on young girls from schools.
“You have to train a player from a very young age, preferably when the girls are in school. Through working with schools, the players grow and develop the right techniques of playing football and improve their talent,” she said.
Cultural differences have for years been a big challenge for the girls in Turkana to pursue their football ambitions.
However, County FKF women representative Rael Lomoti believes that the program is a game changer.
“For our community, such a thing is rare, especially for our girls, who have for so many years been left behind in the world of sports, especially football. Today is a big day for a nomadic girl to experience this launch,” she said.
Lomoti, admitted that girls’ from the region had not fully realized their sporting potentials in the past due to a myriad of challenges, but the program, which primarily focuses on training pupils, will bring about change.
“Our girls, for so many years, have undergone a lot of challenges that are preventing them from playing football, and the first one is culture,” she added.
