The legendary goalkeeper marked his sixth appearance at the World Cup in front of his home crowd, capping off a phenomenal career
Few footballers receive a farewell as memorable as Guillermo Ochoa's.
As Mexico celebrated a dominant 3-0 World Cup victory, the spotlight belonged entirely to the veteran goalkeeper. Ochoa kissed the goalposts one last time, embraced fellow shot-stoppers Raul Rangel and Carlos Acevedo, and took in the deafening chants from the Estadio Azteca crowd.
Overcome with emotion, he dropped to one knee as tears rolled down his face before his teammates lifted him into the air in a fitting tribute to one of the country's greatest-ever players.

If that’s it, what a fitting end.

Just a day before Mexico's second group-stage match at the 2026 World Cup, reports confirmed that Ochoa's remarkable career was nearing its conclusion. While the announcement carried plenty of emotion, it was hardly unexpected. The goalkeeper had previously revealed that this tournament would be his final appearance for El Tri.
“The Mexico national team has always been my compass in my career and my life,” an emotional Ochoa said during his appearance in FIFA's Letters That Unite series. “It’s given me direction.”
Since making his international debut in 2005, Ochoa has become one of the defining figures of Mexican football. His retirement marks the end of an era — not only as Mexico's most-capped goalkeeper, but also as perhaps the nation's most recognizable World Cup icon.
With Mexico already assured of first place in Group A and leading Czechia 2-0 in their final group-stage encounter, anticipation swept through the stadium when Ochoa began preparing to enter the match. The roar from the crowd grew louder as the veteran removed his warm-up gear and headed toward the touchline.
His final chapter lasted only a little over 12 minutes, including stoppage time, but it was enough. More importantly, it happened at the very stadium where his journey with the national team began more than twenty years earlier.

Ochoa leaves the game as part of a truly exclusive club. Alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, he is one of only three players ever to feature in six different World Cups.
For Ochoa, the World Cup was never just another tournament. It became the stage on which his legacy was built, ensuring that his name will forever be linked to football's biggest event.
