Kennedy Mwendwa eager to continue balancing education and professional football.

Immediate former St. Anthony’s Boys High School Captain Kennedy Mwendwa says he wants to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science in addition to playing football professionally.

Mwendwa attained a B- grade in the KCSE results released on Monday afternoon by Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha. The youngster has thanked God and his parents for the support they accorded him through the four years in school

“I want to thank God and my parents for guiding me through the four years in high school and for helping me attain a grade that will enable me further my studies,” he told Mozzart Sport.

Mwendwa has admitted that balancing between academics and sports at the reigning national football champions was not easy but with support from teachers, he managed to go get a breakthrough. He plans to further his studies by pursuing a Bachelor’s degree.

“It was not an easy balance but through help from the teachers, I managed to hack both. I definitely want to play professional football and at the same time pursue an Actuarial Science degree. In as much as football is important, education is equally vital because it will not only act as a fallback plan but also guide you in your daily activities," he added.

St. Anthony’s games teacher Peter Mayoyo praised Mwendwa and the other five footballers who sat for their final exams. He further revealed that they are going to encourage them to continue with their studies at the tertiary level.

“Mwendwa was a very hardworking and disciplined boy, that’s why he was our team captain. I am happy for him and the other five footballers who sat for their exams. None of them got below a C- and for me, that’s a good performance. We are going to encourage them to further their education as they play because it’s very important,” he said.

Mayoyo, a former Kenya national team hockey player and sprinter further spoke on the importance of students backing their sports talents with education.

“At St. Anthony’s we support students in both. Our slogan is ‘Home of Scholars and Sportsmen’ meaning we value both and we encourage them to have a good balance between sports and education I always give these students my own example. I represented Kenya in hockey, I was also a sprinter for the country, I am a teacher, a coach and at the same time, I have a master’s degree. So there’s enough time to do sports and academics if a player is disciplined enough,” he said.
